Hi, I'm after a couple of the smallest flashes available that will work with the voltage/whatever my EOS kicks out! I'm not worried about having the right hotshoe etc as I will be adapting to suit- but want to wire 2 little ones up for macro work. Cant afford the proper ones like the Canon MT 24EX :(

EOS as you call it,kicks out nowt. But beware small flashes can have a nasty bite. This is because small flash cases can only carry a small capacitor so the voltage has to be high to give a good flash. BE CAREFUL

You just need a normal flash gun that you can turn the power down on. Yongnuos are cheap, that FITP sells. Check the advertisers for sale section on here.

Or you could use a RayFlash adapter here http://www.ray-flash.com/ or the O-Flash which although it loses a lot of light should be okay for macro, v cheap, eg here http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.33293 Or the Marumi ringflash is only £100 http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-marumi-drf14c-ring-flash-for-canon/p1026071 All of these retain auto-TTL exposure control.

I heard some horro stories about cheap ring flased which completely burnt out the circuitry in the hotshoe or something? Why I stayed clear

Oh- and I have a YN-460 and is a lot of flash for the money, but still quite bulky, think its exactly the same size as the 580EX

No problem on that score with the Marumi.
