Hi all

I like my Hama shoulder bags as I can change lenses without having to remove everything from my shoulders. Trouble is, I've done a lot of walking recently and my shoulder is starting to ache with all the weight on one side.

I think I basically want backpack I can swing round and open for a lens change without having to remove it from my back, but it needs to be big enough to cope with a 1-series body.

I had a Tamrac expedition 7x, but that needs removing, laying on the ground to access the gear.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Phil

Anyone help please?

Lowepro Slingshot? 202 or 302 I would think. I have a 202 and love it - and can changes lenses without taking it off. Should be big enough for 1-series too - my 550D fits with at least a couple of inches of height to spare.

Thanks for the suggestions - I wonder if a flipside is a better bet.

if youre having problems with a shoulder bag a sling type backpack would be just as bad in my experience, they still pull on one shoulder.

Agreed. The Lowepro backpacks still offer the quick access compartments like the sling bags, but distribute the weight properly like a backpack does across your upper body. I don't know how people can lug around gear for hours in messenger and shoulder style bags - it would kill me

definate back pack for me lol. Luring gear out and hiking is ........

So weight distribute from the backpack is good for me lol.

I'm really happy with my Tamrac Evolution:

Changed my lenses a few times on sunday without taking it off my back. You can also have it as backpack or sling. Very versatile bag!

That looks excellent! I think I'll see if I can play with one.

Kata 3N1 30 does it for me. Configure as backpack to lug gear, then @ 15secs to convert to sling when on site. Can be accessed from left or right shoulder. Takes my gripped 50D with 70-200, plus several lenses, flash, batteries etc, with room in the top for phone, waterproof, whatever.

Hi Phil

I use Tamrac 5612 Pro 12 and find it holds all I want and has easy top access. I prefer this type to the backpacks and also have a couple of smaller bags that will just take the camera and 24-105, or another that will accomodate a larger 70-200. Have a look at Tamrac, they have various sizes.

Have a look at FStop Gear bags, they can be swivelled round on the hip straps, and their new bag, the Kenti, has a side opening.

I am going to have to get a similar bag too. I have a crumpler shoulder bag which I love but it does get too much for me lugging it around all day. Will be having a look at the some of the suggestions listed above so thank you :-)

I just ordered the slingshot 302 for £39.99 on amazon with free delivery of course! Sounded a good deal to me and hopefully will be an improvement for my poor back!!

If you like the look of that then I would agree with the post below regarding the Kata 3N1-30 or the 3N1-33 which holds a laptop - I have the 3N1-30 and can get my gear in it (below in sig) and room for more equipment (if I ever have the need for more)

If I'm honest I was looking for a Kata but the tamrac came up at an ok price so went for that and haven't been disappointed :)

Same here when I was looking - got the Kata brand new at a price that I couldn't let go....

Flipside 400 works for me and can be swung round on the waist straps (nice padded ones)

Tried a few bags and this one seems just right for my purposes, also got a Lowepro Classified 220AW Sling, but again its a one strap job and prefer to spread the load evenly

I had a slingshot for a while but as I slowly upgraded my equipment I found it uncomfortable to wear for any length of time. I swapped to a flipside 400AW which worked well until I got the 1D MK IV and I just struggled to get 2 bodies plus my lenses in. When I thought about it I could count on one hand the number of times that I had changed lenses without taking it off so I swapped back to a traditional back pack (Kata Bumblebee 220 PL) because I could get a larger one.

The one feature I miss about the flipside is the rear opening camera compartment. There were two big advantages, 1 more secure and 2 when you put the bag down to open it the side to your back stays uppermost meaning you are unlikely to drop crud all over your back and down your neck.

Thanks all - a Tamrac Evo 8 is on its way!
