I watched a how they are made program ( or half of it) and it was about Teabags, I was amazed to find that plastic was used in in the bag and rather disappointed being a true British teaholic , yet another source of plastic where consuming !

I was surprised too when I first read about plastic in tea bags. The good news is that quite a few manufacturers seem to be moving away from plastic in tea bags.

We have gone back to loose tea but when we shopped in store before lockdown it wasn't always available. We have also had tea from here - https://www.brewteacompany.co.uk/

It is more expensive but good.

I thought about going for loose tea but there was only one option in my local super market, that site looks great, I can remember thinking as a kid tea bags seemed a little strange ( as did remote control TV's) but now it's the other way around . Think how many extra Holgas could be made if the plastic was channeled away from tea bags !

I did wonder about those plastic feeling teabags, as one 'posher' brand comes to mind if you order tea in tearooms!

FWIW we buy Clipper teabags and their 'style' of bag is the conventional sachet but they also state on their boxes that there is no plastics in their teabags ~ phew

Anyone grow their own? We grow it (well, Camelias!) but not 100% sure how best to go about curing etc..

Many moons ago (1980 or '81) I worked with Tetley to try to find a bio-degradable tea bag material that could be used on their existing bagging lines. They were using a mixture of heat and ultrasonic welding to join the top and botton halves of the bag once the tea was in place. We tried hundreds of formulations over a 12 month period but none of them were consistently sealed so they put the project on hold and I'd changed jobs before they started up again.

I'm rather surprised and saddened that in the intervening 40 years no-one has found a solution to this problem :(
