Well I finally got a DSLR towards the end of January so have decided this would be a great way to try and improve my skills. I've joined a little late so I have played catch up a little.
I decided to start at week 4, mainly because it was around this time I got the DSLR and I want to concentrate on the upcoming themes. Hope nobody minds.

Week 4 and 5 are pictures I had that fitted this theme using the new camera, and week 6 was taken for theme. Now all pictures will taken for this theme.

Week 4 Open, literally an open door

Week 5 Hard, a section of Dartmoor granite

Week 6 Clutter, my worskpace. Some say its cluttered I prefer to say its organised chaos lol.

hey richard, i too am new to SLR from 7th jan, and also a late starter on the 52s starting with clutter

so much to learn eh!

like the door :0)

week 6 doesn't really do much for me i'm afraid, but 4 and 5 definately show promise with nice a depth of field! :)

a 52 is a good way for a beginner to get the hang of things...makes you think about what you are doing rather than just shooting anything and everything! Keep up the good work and it will be good to see how you progress

Thanks for your comments.

So much to learn but hopefully I will see an improvement as the weeks go by.
The door is actually the entrance to an old WW2 fuel tank, where all the valves are. The tank is MASSIVE. I tried to get pictures of the inside but with great difficulty they didn't come out aswell as I had hoped.

Week 6 was a tricky one as I wanted to get it done ASAP so I am ready for the next theme. TBH I know the theme was clutter but I think its...well too cluttered lol. The good thing is (hopefully) things can only get better!!

Hi and welcome to the 52. You will learn so much from the nice peeps here.

I've been back into photography just over 6 months now with my first dslr and am learning and gaining knowledge all the time.

Weeks 4 and 5 I really like, especially the dof on week 4, week 6 just doesn't grab me at all, sorry.

Enjoy the 52, look forward to seeing more.

Don't be sorry, much prefer constructive criticism. Week 6 is a bit of flop, i'll be the first to admit it also lol

OK, comments: The Open door has excellent texture and as an idea works, but I think the edge of the door cuts the photo in half. I think the rule of thirds would be a slightly better composition.
Hard works well, great texture, great DoF and nice lead in lines taking us deep into the photo.
Clutter, but sorry it doesn't work. The focal point is the out of focus mouse, and the shot lighting is too flat and bland. The idea is fine, but needs revisiting with more thought on composition and lighting.

Hope you don't mind the criticism.

I appreciate all criticism as long as its constructive, like yours. I am trying not to go back and redo any pictures, but hope to take all comments forward the picture.
With the clutter picture, I chose one with a central focus over the one with the mouse being in focus :bang: as I already have that one I might up that and see if its any better.

Ok so here is another, same scene just a different DOF, I still don't think it does much.

I agree about the subjects, your first two are interesting but the clutter doesn't work for me.

I wholeheartedly agree and suggest you also look at 'clutter' with the rule of thirds in mind?

Only 3 weeks in so plenty of time to apply your new knowledge :D Enjoy, I am :$

Week 4 - I like the DOF and the subject, but I think it's a bit too tight and I'd have preferred to see more of the door. As mentioned above the composition of the door in in the middle could be improved by 1/3 composition instead.

Week 5 and 6 do nothing for me. I don't like the DOF on 5. I think it detracts from the image rather than compliment it. The second shot of the week 6 photo looks more pleasing but then it's no longer a "clutter" photo.
