Is there much difference in speed to the USB2 model

Yes mate, my laptop only has USB2 ports but the USB3 reader uses them to their max where my old USB2 reader was 100% slower

The USB3 reader hooked up to a USB3 port on my desktop empties an 8GB 600x 90mbs card in no time

Yep, Lexar USB3 is quick, and noticeably quicker even on USB2 ports. Be sure to buy only the very best cards too - Sandisk Extreme Pro are worth every penny and were recently on sale on Amazon too.
