hi
i have a friend who wants to put several tutorial projects he has made onto a CD, is there any software out there that will stop people copying the cd, and if so where please..

Hi mate, not sure about that one, not my speciality....hope someone comes along with an answer!

Nothing will stop piracy.

If you were to ask "how can piracy be reduced?", then there may be a few soultion. But don't waste time/money thinking you can stop it. You can't.

he mentioned to me that some music CDs dont allow you to copy them, how do they do that?

I don't know how it works, but every album you can think of is available online somewhere. Whatever systems are in place, there are ways to bypass them.

If you want to copy-protect an entire CD rather than an executable file on the CD, you need to be looking at something like Starforce Protection Studio which I think is expensive.

If you want to protect an executable file by providing licence keys, then try Armadillo.

There are a couple of ways to make it difficult to copy audio cds. One is to put a data track on there as well so PCs read that and play a 2nd set of tracks that are lower quality using something similar to mp3. The other method is a bit more complex and creates errors in the copy but also stops the original disc playing on some audio players and PCs.

The bottom line with copy protection is that no matter what method is used the same basic technique will break it - find where the code is checking for something and bypass it.

I suppose the other question is why would he want to stop people copying? Unless he's an established business he's better off putting his software on the public domain. If he is an established business then he probably should get it done professionally :)

If Microsoft cannot stop people copying Windows XP how much chance do you think anyone else has got?

Friend of mine brought back a copy of XP Pro (SP2) from Thailand.

I did a project for a customer a few months ago to test their CD for just this. They spent a fortune on trying to protect their stuff and every time I managed to find a tool on the net that bypassed what they did. One copy took near 3 hours for them to encode and I copied it in less than 5 mins.

I suggest you tell him to download VB express or c++ Express (both free) and build an application with that so that the movies run in the application. Then, only people who know what they are doing will be able to pull the images and video.

He will need to encode everything but there are free tools to do that.

Also note that anyone with vista can now snip a section of the screen to an image, so any image that you can see is now able to be copied at high res by anyone.

Anything can be copied, No one has managed to make it impossible.

The hardest thing to get around is a hardware dongle but even they can be bypassed by those with extensive coding knowledge.

You say tutorial projects but not what kind of thing it is. For example making a text type document into a pdf makes it more difficult to copy, make it password protected with individual passwords for each purchaser makes it more easily traceable if it is. These things make it more difficult but never impossible to copy. Are the tuts he wants to make likely to be widely sought after?

thanks guys, its as i thought, cannot stop it. Just thought you guys might know something else. my friend has spent a long time writing and displaying photos on a cd about making furniture, sort of 'how to's '' and he is worried that people would copy them and use his stuff for their gain.
many thanks guys
all the best

What's the point in wasting money, the pirates can crack Photoshop etc. so what chance has your friend got. Anyway if it's not a popular programme then no-one is going to go to the bother :bang:
