after watching a tutorial about pinhole cameras and the effect of pinholes having a somewhat soft image, and 9-11 ish 'light stops' difference with it creating a makeshift tiny aperture, i was wondering what difference in effect you would get if for example, if i got several body caps and made them each have slightly different sized holes- effectively trying to create a wider set of apertures etc for timings etc

i believe pinholes to general be 0.25mm, which i believe to be somewhere in the region of 9-11 light stops difference, but for example if i had a pinhole 0.50mm or 1mm or 2mms (knocking down the light stop difference) what kind of images would i get then???

also- are the 'holga' style pieces just pinhole cameras or is there something different with them to pinholes, as theres numerous different holgas available, but to my they all do the same thing??

In theory (IIRC), once the pinhole is large enough to avoid any diffraction problems, the smaller the hole, the sharper the image. Yes, you'll get faster shutter speeds (although I doubt you get handholdable ones!) but the softness will make any images almost unuseable.

Again, IIRC, Holgas, Lomos and the like do have actual lenses but not particularly good ones, giving their cult images which nobody would accept from a "real" camera but are happy to pay for in a toy.

Don't bother, it's a waste of a perfectly good lens cap.

I have the wunderlust pinhole attachment, is pretty pointless, tiny apertures requiring long exposures for bad pictures.

The whole pinhole/holga/toy lens thing is just a short lived attention grabber for the terminally bored.

You wouldn't get any kind of a pic, apart from a really crappy one, using a lens cap as the pinhole.

You need to use an ultra thin material for the pinhole - you could try baking foil if you could keep it totally flat when on the camera - maybe use a lens cap with a large hole in it to support it?

Good luck with any attempts you make.

Might even try it myself if I get a bit bored.

.

cheers for the responses!

im loving the sticks in the mist- if thats what the pics of lol

will save my time with the variable pin hole idea then lol

im still undecided on the holga/lomo styling though.... yes the images arent brilliant but theres just something about them which kind of intrigues me a little... may have to do a little more researching....

I feel you may be missing the point slightly.
