pictures taken on digi camera

i see when anyone is selling a digital camera, they sometimes put up how many pictures it has taken.
is it possible to tell how many pictures the camera has actually taken

Most I would say except some higher end ones for some reason.

Or older Canon DSLRs :/ Think it was 40D onwards that you can use exif to find out shutter count.
