pictures on a disc

can anyone tell me if it is possible to put photos on a disc, with reduced quality so that if they are printed off they are not good quality?
if so, do i need special software?

You need to divorce the 2 issues. Reducing the image quality and burning them to a disc are 2 separate issues.

A printer will generally print at a resolution of 300DPI where as a monitor will display an image at 72DPI so if you save your image at around 50 DPI it will reduce the quality a little on screen but it certainly shouldn't print very well unless printed very small.

Reducing the DPI of an image can be done in various software like Photoshop and Lightroom.

that's complicated.
DPI is all related to the size the image wants to be.

for a starter in digital photography I would just whack all the photos you want to put on the disk in one folder.
They'll be around 3000 pixels across or so...
then use something like irfanview
It's free.
use the batch image option (in the file menu) to convert all the files into 604px on the longest side and output them to a different folder so that you don't overwrite the originals.
then burn that new folder to a disk... they'll be great for facebook but rubbish if printed out.

YOU CAN NOT change the DPI of an image all you can do is change its size
DPI is only used when outputting to a printer or screen
You need to reduce its size NOT dpi. make it say 800pix on its longest size and they cant make must of a big print

So when you use the crop tool in Photoshop and it gives you the option to crop to set dimensions and a set DPI then it's not actually changing the DPI?
What does that DPI option do on the crop tool then?

If you are cropping to a set size and you set the dpi all that is happen it its doing the maths for you as to what the pix count should be to print at what ever size you set it will make a image size reduction or increase depending on the crop and size you set to crop at.

sounds like you dont need special software...what quality would you want to reduce...
once they are...reduced...onboard in a separate folder..
just burn that to the disc
then preview the disc to see if they are rubbish on your screen

are you trying to stop people printing from a sample...cant you put a red cross or something over the images

i used to have my my big trannies mounted in sleeves sealed at both ends with a red cross over the viewing window...to avoid reproduction without buying...i wonder if it ever worked
