Picture Sizes

A little confused about this, I store all my original pics on a external hard drive and transfer them to the pc when I want to do anything with them.
Question is, When I browse over them on the external (this is just the example I did) it says the pic is 3.93 MB.
When I transfer it to the pc and crop it (not very much) it reduces to 372 KB.
That seems a big drop to me.

Maybe the program your using to crop is resaving the pictures at a higher compression? Try a different program or check your settings.

Check the DPI settings on the crop tool - it's probably set really low

Thanks for the replies, I use Elements 2 to crop and resize, was set to medium, change it to high and the size doubled!

You can't get something for nothing; a reduction that large in filesize is definately reducing the quality.
