Hi, Newbie here I'm new to the website and new to photography. I have a question for you all.

I've bought a canon 400D just last week, so not quite use to it yet. My question is: when i take a picture of a fast moving subject the image comes out blur (even with this fast shutter speed camera), why is that? I set the camera to auto then follow the subject in the view finder (holding the shutter half way down) as the subject approach me i click the shutter full and that's it! A blur picture. Just when i want a sharp one.
What am i doing wrong?

Have you read the manual?
Are you using AI SERVO focus mode? If not, it won't track a moving object. (You'll probably need to get out of AUTO mode, though).

Sound like you have focused long before you havr took the shot, what focus mode are you using? one shot or servo?
 
Panning moving subjects is an art form in itself & takes some practise, I'm sure others more experienced than me in this technique will give you a few tips !!

Auto probably isn't the best mode.

If you want to have a go at 'easy' mode then put the 400D into 'Sports' mode. This will put the camera into an Auto Focus mode (AI Servo) that will track the object while the shutter button is half pressed and select (hopefully) the right shutter speed. (not sure you can even select the shutter speed in Auto?).

Otherwise put the camera into Tv (Shutter Priority) mode. Set the Auto Focus to AI Servo and the AF Point Select to the centre spot. You can then select a fast shutter speed (depends on what you are trying to shoot and you lens), half press the button and track (or 'pan') the subject. The camera should auto focus. You'll have to take care to select the correct ISO to make sure you don't under- (or maybe over-) expose the shot.

Once you start getting some success you can think about slowing the shutter and panning more to get some blur into the background to give the feeling of more speed.
 
Hi,

From all your advice it sounds like i had the camera set up totally wrong, the camera was set in one shot auto mode (silly me) i haven't read the manual yet because i just couldn't wait to use the camera, seems like i was treating the 400D like a point and shoot.
