Hi Liz.
Welcome to TP.
PS Elements is fine...you are not missing out and its IDEAL for beginners!
Enjoy.

Liz, Elements will be absolutely fine for you and is easily good enough for beginners such as yourself (I have Elements 8).

Ben, Elements 8 is a great buy :)

There's loads of differences between lightroom and Elements. Lightroom is first and foremost a photo management system with some excellent editing capabilities built in. Elements is first and foremost a photo editing tool which has some catalogueing capabilities.

In addition to the management capabilities in Lightroom, it provides workflow capabilities, where you can edit/manipulate groups of photos at a time, and do all this either directly within Lightroom, or do things automatically as you import into Lightroom. The editing capabilities do not rival Photoshop, but are absolutely more than enough for a beginner/advanced hobbyist. You can link lightroom and elements or Photoshop so you if you feel you want to do further editing in an 'external' package, you can do that from within Lightroom.

Further, Lightroom edits are 'non-destructive' which means you can backtrack through the edits to see what individual changes does to the photos. Elements changes the picture and doesn't allow for 'backtracking'. and also edits a single photo at a time.

I use Lightroom to manage my pictures and do the bulk of my editing. I switch to elements to do some extra edits on a single picture. (eg. selective coloring comes to mind.)

I would recommend using Lightroom over Elements, and add Elements when/if you need to. Lightroom handles 99% of the editing I need to do.

As the name suggests, Elements only has parts of the full PS6 but is more than ample for most people when editing for the net ..............

I used Elements and was always able to go back through the history of my editing as I do in CS4.

Thanks guys, lot of info you have shared there (Scott especially, didnt realise you were in Chester either).

Still unsure about which to look at seriously. I need to learn skills in either of them I am to use them. I am trying to see if I can get my info together so that I can get LR3 on a student discount, otherwise I think its just too expensive and I would end up getting Elements.

I will see what I can do, either way I am going to need to buy a book on them, otherwise Im weeing in the wind.

I would suggest downloading a trial of lightroom before buying, it's very different to PS and I've been learning 2.7 and must admit find it annoying in some ways.

PS elements, at least on a PC, can for the home user, offer more than pro PS because of its superb integrated organiser. Elements 6, unrelated to PS6 and much newer, is preferable to Elements 8 because of the much more flexible print module.

Elements 6 can save all of your edit details, should you want to if you save a s a PSD rather than Jpeg. The integrated raw decoder allows bulk processing of images for the basic adjustments but updating the raw decoder for recent cameras can be a bit of a fiddle if computers ain't your thing.

Elements 6 will only update to a certain version of ACR, you may need version 8 for more recent cameras.
