Software is a very personal thing- some people find photoshop intuitive while others think it's clumsy and illogical.
This thread is a good source of info- I would have a read and then pick a couple and have a trial. Most offer free trials to try it out to see if you get on with it or not.
There are plenty that would do the job- subject is irrelevant but only you can answer whether the software suits you and your budget.
The obvious ones would be Photoshop, Photoshop elements, Lightroom, Paintshop pro, and ACDCee.
All offer various options for ajusting images, as do many others.
As above really, the other software is what came with your camera. Don't know what your shooting with, but Canons software is good and certainly worth a look at.
