hi all
im far from a computer expert so I'm hoping you guys can shed some light.
my interest in photography has been renewed after a long lay off: & also after inheriting some equipment.I had Adobe Elements on my MacBook which I purchased a few years ago because I didn't want to commit to a subscription for the full version, but after updatating to OS Tahoe from X it won't work anymore? my question is,... Do I need to re purchase which is really anoying? Or is there a way round this? or am I better off going the full hog & subscribing.
all input very much appreciated.
Marc

When I came back to photography I tried open source software (darktable) and considered Affinity. Both excellent products.

But when I did a trial of lightroom (not classic, the all in cloud version) it was so easy to use that I just signed up for that.

So many others have it that I also found it easy to get advice also.

It's really good imo

Your camera maker might have some basic development software that you can download and use free of charge.

If you DO want the full-fat Adobe package then wait until the black Friday sales and then buy it heavily discounted through Amazon. You could also look at On1 Photoraw (not a subscription - one-off payment) available as a free trial, ditto DXO Photolab and possibly Capture One. If you prefer FOC then also consider darktable as suggested, Raw Therapee or DigiKam, all of which are free.

Check out Gimp, Darktable, and Raw Therapee, all quite usefull, Gimp is nearest to Photoshop, and theres a Photogimp thats designed to be even closer ( not tried that)

I am very much like you, I've just come back to photography after some time. I decided to dive straight in with a Lightroom subscription Classic and Cloud, bought from Amazon last week for £65 on their prime days. Might be worth keeping an eye out for a deal like that, at almost half price I doubled up and got 2 years. Pretty sure they will do the same on black friday which is usually late November.

The most obvious pretty full featured non subscription alternative to PS these days would be Affinity Photo. Unfortunately they've taken it off sale until the end of this month (October). There are concerns that it's new owner, Canva, may move to a subscription model, but they did promise there would always be a purchase option. In the past there have been occasional offer periods when it's half price. Lots of videos available to help.

For many Mac users Apple Photos might give enough?

Yes normally I would suggest Affinity photo too, but unfortunately as you said its not available at the moment
In the past they have had offers on , I bought the first version of Affinity for £25 and more recently Affinity 2 for half price as well , can’t remember the exact price, even full price itsworth it though
If the OP happens to have an ipad the ipad version of Affinity is free at the moment, there is a thread on here about it

I believe Bruce Williams is just restarting his YouTube series on Darktable as so much has changed since he first started his channel if you do go down that route

It's very good FOSS but I just find the user interface of lightroom superb. I also got a guide from the 'lightroom Queen' website which is also superb

Since you use Nikon, the free Nikon NX Studio isn't bad... in some cases it is the best processor available for Nikon raw files; and it's certainly the best at making raw files look like the camera generated jpegs.

At least 90% of my editing is done in Lightroom, and it keeps getting better; these days very few images ever go into Photoshop.
