Beginner Photoshop v Lightroom

Personally I would download the free trials of each and see which works for you - they both do pretty much the same thing but in very different ways. I use PSE - I tried LR but really didn't get on with, whereas lots on here say the opposite, so it really is worth trying both and seeing which works best with your brain.

Sorry but this is completely wrong.

Lightroom is designed as a complete workflow tool for photographers, photoshop is a very detailed image editing tool

To get the best from Lightroom you really do need to understand the workflow process and to this end Adobe provide many free, easy to follow, short tutorials and I highly recommend them. It doesn't take long to understand how to use this tool correctly, but if you're not used to a workflow method and think it's just about editing then its a new way of thinking.

As many others have said, don't think of it as an image editor. It starts with the library module, an easy way to find and sort your images. You use the develop module for most of your normal editing (although you can jump out into an editing tool of your choice and back in again - I use photoshop), The map module can be fun to use to look at photos in an area you've taken, if your camera supports gps location, then the remaining modules are for output, book, slideshow, print and web. The print module is excellent for producing final images.

I bought a book, I watched tutorials, I spent a month using it exclusively, then gave up and went back to PSE (and its Organiser) which I found simpler, faster and more logical. Perhaps I am weird, thick or both.
