Photoshop start up tips

i am going to sign up for Photoshop having using Lightroom for about a year or so. Please help by giving your top tips on getting started. I also like to have a reference book handy so if you could recommend one of those that would be useful. Thanks
 
When I signed up for Creative Cloud, I found the Adobe tutorials very helpful.
Right from setting up, basic and then the more advanced stages are all covered.
There is a lot to learn.

Yup. I used PS for about three years and though it over-hyped guff. Then I learned about layers. Boy was I wrong.
 
There's an immense amount of help and tutorials online, especially youtube.
You never really master it, time and again it surprises you with alternative ways to do things.
 
Top Tip
When you open a photo the first thing to do is Ctrl+J.
That makes a new layer with a copy of the photo called Layer 1-that way you do not alter the original when you are editing

His tutorials are arranged as a load of different techniques and you can search through them to find the one that you need.
My only complaint is that he can be a bit quick at times, so you need to back up and repeat a section to see exactly what he's doing.
 
Layers have been mentioned a couple of times... adjustment layers is what makes photoshop stand apart from other editing programs.

It's not JUST the layers, it's the blending modes and filters that make the difference.
I used to use PaintShop Pro, which also has layers, but the PS version is much more sophisticated.

I was talking about Serif Photo Plus not Paint Shop Pro. Serif Photo Plus has Adjustment layers which provide for non destructive editing, It is not as good as the Photoshop's adjustment layers but Photo plus definitely has Adjustment layers

In most cases that's not going to be the most efficient way of doing things. You're doubling your file-size right away for (very often) no reason at all. Most things can be done on blank layers with sampling, or on adjustment layers. Both of those will add tiny fractions to your filesize, and give your the same control. :thumbs:

I know, I was simply pointing out that PSP also does layers, they are not exclusive to Serif.

PSP has separate Raster, Vector, Art Media, Mask and Adjustment Layers, - all similar to PhotoShop.

However, I still think that Photoshop has a more comprehensive implementation of layers.
 
Layers are very important to use and very handy when it comes to changing the same print multiple times to try different effects
 
Though huge number of Photoshop resources are available there in online, still you can learn from Lynda site as well. And yes Psdtut is also great and old resource to help you out. Last but not the least sign up in Adobe forum to get the answers of all your problems or questions.
