After some great advice from people on here I have started to try and move over from jpeg to RAW. I have just tried to put my first couple of shots into photoshop to play around with and when I tried and open the files, it comes up saying they are NEF and are not the right kind of document. Is this something I am doing wrong?

you'll need ACR to open them, check your software for updates.
What version of photoshop are you running?

Forgive me for being a total beginner but what is ACR? I have CS2 and Elements 9, I do tend to use CS2 more often.

NEF is the file format of Nikon raw files, you will need Adobe Camera Raw(ACR) to read this file format. Be sure it is the latest version so that D90 is covered.

Is it for the nikon d90? if so I don't think your version of photoshop is fully compatable, from memory the d90 wasn't supported untill CS3 (towards the end of that if I'm right) I think you'll need the latest update for cs2 as linked above and the adobe DNG converter, that converts your raw (easy to use) to adobes own sort of raw that cs2 should be able to open.

That's great, thanks for your help everyone. I will have a look at downloading the upgrades and hopefully that will do the trick. I will post how I get on.
