Tried out creating a panorama by importing the pictures into lightroom and then getting photoshop to create a panorama. I have done a couple before but this time created a 2*2 which resulted in a 1.5GB tiff file. Now a tip for everyone. Make sure you don't have where you save the files setup to be indexed. I did and a bit later my matching ground to a halt. I had to boot into safe mode to move the file!

Lightroom manages the panorama creation. When done I have been just exiting and choosing yes when it asks to save and lightroom just imports the new file automatically. I will have a look through the settings for a default file format.

In preferences there is a section for external editing where you can choose defaults for editing in Photoshop. I use PSD files because they're a fraction of the size of TIFFs and I'll be saving as a PSD in the end from Photoshop anyway.

Then shift+command+E (if you're on a Mac) will open the files from Lightroom directly into PS, no need to save then reopen in PS.
