Hi all,

I am currently using a macbook and iphoto to PP my shots. I'm quite new to it all so just used what I have. However, I will be getting an imac soon and will be getting some more advanced PP software.

So do I go photoshop light room or aperture 3? Can I run/get plug-ins for aperture?

Cheers

Ah, I didn't know you could get free trials. Good call that man :)

I'd use photoshop. It's the industry standard. Treat Lightroom as an addition to your main editing software, not an alternative to it. There's a wealth of stuff you can't do in lightroom that you can do in PS.

I do it the other way round. Lightroom (or Aperture in my case) for cataloging and initial adjustments, and then out to Photoshop for more extensive editing, should it be required, which in my case is very rare.

The list should be Lightroom or Aperture.

Photoshop isn't really the same as Aperture.

Oh and lightroom wins that :)

+1 for this method, very rarely do i need to open Photoshop these days, most PPing i do is now done in Lightroom

I'm curious as to why you're suggesting Lightroom while dismissing Aperture. Fundamentally they're the same kind of software.

I love Photoshop and know it inside out, having used it for more than 15 years, written about it, been on Adobe's beta team since CS, etc. It's a fantastic piece of software that has so many uses, and yet... I hardly ever use it for photography, using Aperture instead. Aperture is just generally quicker, probably because it functions as both an image processing tool as well as a cataloguing tool. Processing batches of photos that all require individual attention takes ages in Photoshop, whereas Aperture or Lightroom makes this process so much more efficient.

Lightroom and Aperture are similar-ish so not a lot of point doubling up IMHO (although there are differences) I'd be tempted to suggest you stick with Aperture and maybe add a Photoshop elements for the more tricky jobs that require layers, cutting/pasting etc.

So do I. I think you misread my post... or it wasn't clear. My addition to Photoshop, I don't mean that it literally comes afterwards in my workflow.. I just mean it's an addition to my main editing software (PS). The fact that it comes first in my workflow was neither here now there.

Actually I have dragged all of the above in to it. I'm new to all the PP software that is about and all the different names and companies leaves me a little boggled.

At the mo I am just processing RAW files and then tweaking the sliders I have in iphoto to enhance the final outcome. I am happy with most results and for now don't need to do much more. But, always a but :) I see what people are achieving with multiple photos in one and would like to go down that route. I would also like to get in to creating some stacking shots for star trails and I do also like the HDR images.

So, where to go? :)
