Hi.

I am new to Photoshop having recently bought the Elements 10 software.

I downloaded it before Xmas but with relatively limited editing experience I keep using my old basic Picasa as it is really easy and I am used to it.

Does anybody have any advice or can recommend any books/magazines/DVDs which will help with my understanding?

Thanks.

Have a search on adobe.tv

Lots of tutorials there...

Do a search on Youtube for Elements tutorials and you'll find loads of stuff on there that should help to get you started.

+1 for youtube as well. I have just downloaded Elements 10 trial as well.

I have been useing gimp & raw therapee (both free programs). Good in their own right but I am finding elements a lot quicker to use.

Anything I can not work out I just go to youtube and the answer is there.

Have a look at Digital Photo magazine. Comes out every month and includes a CD that walks you through the techniques that they do in that particular issue.

Practical Photoshop is another monthly mag that includes a CD but is a bit more advanced.

Good luck.

One of the best books is Barbara Brundage's Photoshop Elements 10 - The Missing Manual. It teaches you all of the basics of selections, layers, masking, and filters, and goes into the kinds of processing you most need as a photographer.

Another one that's often recommended is Scott Kelby's The Photoshop Elements 10 Book for Digital Photographers. And Matt Kloskowski's Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop's Most Powerful Feature is useful after you've got going, as is David Asch and Steve Caplin's How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements 10 which is about photo compositing.

You'll also find a lot of help at Elements Village.

All very helpful replies, thank you.

I will look at getting some of those.

Let me second Scott Kelby's book. An earlier version got me started with PSE5 and gave me further help with later editions. YouTube tutorials make a great supplement, but I think the structure of a book is fundamental. Best of luck to you.
