Photoshop elements 11

Hi, trying to get started on elements 11, layers,but cannot get the layers icons on the top right to respond, there not " lighting up", moved from CS5 on windows to Elements on a Mac and struggling a bit, thanks

Have you got the " expert" tab selected ? If you're in "guided", I don't think you can do it.

I think that's how it is in windows anyway

If you want to work from the top tool bar you like said above need to select expert, if not you get the tabs down the side to help you

Thanks for the replies, I've sorted it,I was in expert, but it was in 16 bit, changed to 8 bit and everything's working,
