When I was using the brush tool the circle showing the edge of my brush disappeared so I couldn't actually see what I was doing! It stilol worked fine but wasn't showing me the outline of the tool :| was very strange.
There is a setting in prefs to give you options of how you see brushes.
Photoshop>Preferences>Cursors
You can choose to see the shape of the brush or the cross hairs or a few other options. Sometime prefs files will reset, so you need to go back and change the options.

The problem with losing the Cursor is sometimes the result of having the Caps Lock on. You can have the Brush Cursor as big as it can be, but if you press the Caps Lock it becomes a dot which can catch a lot of people out.
That may or may not have been the OPs problem, but it's something to keep in mind.
A thing that irritates me about Cursors is that you can't change the colour of them. (unless someone knows different) Trying to be precise with a grey Cursor on a grey sky is challenging.
