When applying USM in photoshop I like to apply it to a copy of the background layer so I still have the unsharpened original. I've noticed however that this increases the file size considerably; is it possible to apply another (non-background) layer for the purpose of sharpening?

Cheers :)

Thanks - this is the issue though, I want to keep the original background and layers for ease of future editing..

save as option? keep the unsharpened file seperate to the sharpened one:shrug:
