I’ve accidentally ended up on a BTEC Level 3 photography course – a bit of a surprise to find myself there as I’d enrolled for Conversational Russian! This sort of thing happens to me all the time; in this particular instance all I can say is that it’s a good job I happen to have a camera

The module for this term is “Experimental Photography” with the emphasis on experimentation being weighted towards post processing rather than in camera.

I’ve decided on the theme for my final project but could do with some Photoshop effects suggestions. I’ve got a few ideas and have planned shots in mind composed with the PP I’d like to apply subsequently. All final output has to have been inspired by the work of other photographers or artists and this is what I’ve come up with so far:

Zoom blur - inspired by a Kos Evans shot entitled “Fizz”
Solarisation – inspired by the work of Man Ray
Tilt shift – can’t recall where the inspiration came from; in my files somewhere
Selective colouring – as above
Abstract mandala – Katerina Drzkova/Ryo Ohwada
Triptych – entrants of the POTY January competition (who will be credited, of course :))
Double exposure – e.g. Lee Miller’s “Exploding Hand”

I appreciate the fact that I’ve got some of the terminology wrong – just my own shorthand – but I’m sure anyone visiting this section will know what I mean.

The foregoing list is actually more than enough as far as the lecturer is concerned but I’m so enthusiastic and would really like to go the extra mile and produce a truly dazzling portfolio for my own satisfaction, not just something that will pass an exam.

If anyone has further suggestions they’d be really welcome. Thanks in advance for your help :)

p.s. Not for one minute asking for anyone to “do the work” for me or even point me in the direction of tutorials/reading material. Just name me an effect (the more the merrier) and I’ll thoroughly enjoy researching it myself.

Zoom blur - Can't go wrong with a bit of Radial Blur.

Solarisation - Again there's a tool for this, but I suggest researching "Solarisation techniques in Photoshop"

Selective colouring - Easy enough, just use the brush tool with a feathered edge on a new layer with the colour you want. Steady hand and patience to clean it up with the eraser afterwards required!

Double exposure - Usually you can do this by pasting a new layer and then selecting Overlay or Soft Light as the blending mode. For a lighter alternative, use Screen
