I've just been booked for the biggest shoot I've ever done, been after the booking for 9 months and it's happening on 28th of this month.
The DJ plays across 4 CDJs in a showcase type thing, and he want to incorporate the decks into the shoot, without making it look like he's playing in a nightclub.
I'm a bit nervous and unsure how to get across the 4-decks thing without making it look overly staged?

Laura.

P.S. If I don't reply it's because I'm at the doctors, I won't be long.

First post, I'm no pro and my ideas are VERY staged but what the heck:

I'm assuming that what you mean by "without making it look like he's playing in a nightclub" is that they wants his 4 decks in shot but he doesnt want to actually be DJ'ing at them. If so it begs the question where is the shoot taking place? A few ideas that spring to mind are:

>>>In the kitchen drying up with towel in hand and the decks stacked up like plates.

>>>On some grungy looking outdoor stairs with decks around them. Maybe a foot on one and leant on another with the other two around and about. Maybe at night with a flash rig.

>>>Set the scene as though he is moving into a new place, three decks are already unpacked and the DJ is fishing the fourth out of a box.

As I said the ideas are very staged but in my eyes might be quite cool. Obviously they completely go against what you were after so feel free to disregard everything above.

Hope it goes well and post some pics up after if you can.

Joe

He hasn't got a clue what he wants (apart from getting the 4 deck point across), and the usual shoots I do of DJs are very moody type, sat on some steps or leaning against a wall. These shots have to stand out from all the usual stuff.
And yes, he doesn't want to actually be DJing in them, he has those kind of photos taken every weekend almost.
I like the outdoor idea, but he won't take all his kit outside as it's worth a lot of money. One shoot (the one under his non-showcase alias) is taking place outside in the daytime, the other ones are to look darker and incorporate the decks.
Apologies if this is making no sense, the doctor has just put me on some meds for my neck that make me a tad confused.

You have a bit of a problem, but not an uncommon one. The client ( the DJ ) wants a shot, but doesn't know exactly what he wants.

Have you done a rece. That way you'll get some idea of the area you've got to work in. I take it it will done when the venue is empty.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is maybe a very low key shot with just the area he wants illuminated. Lighting may be difficult though. Maybe think about extreme wide angle from a low angel shot. Bit difficult without knowing the venue, and what the client wants

Don't know what sort of music he does, but some sort of urban area? Big wall covered in graffiti, decks placed... somewhere, him elsewhere, perhaps in foreground looking moody/relaxed as appropriate?

He plays hard trance, hard house and techno. One alias is the lighter side, one is darker, hence doing 2 shoots in the one day.
And yes, I often find people know they want a shoot but that's as far as they go, and if I don't know the person that well I struggle to come up with things. It'll all come in time though I think.
