Just wanted some feedback on the following softbox lighting kit...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128473&pf_rd_i=468294

I basically want to start playing around with portraits from home, purely as a hobby just to photo my kids etc. I had some good advice on here re backdrops which I have now sorted and now want to purchase some lighting. A friend of a friend suggested the above as a starting point and the reviews on Amazon sound ok, but before I make any purchase I just wanted some advice from others. Are softboxes the way to go or should I be looking at umbrella lighting?

Im obviously just a beginner so I dont feel like I can justify spending hundreds until I have learnt everything with the basics first!

Any help, would be greatly appreciated!

Please don't waste your money on this, it's continuous lighting, not suitable at all for people photography. This article may help to explain the issues.

Thank you, I appreciate you telling me that!

Is there a kit (for complete beginners) like myself that anyone can recommend for me! The world of lighting seems to be extremely vast and rather confusing to say the least!

Thanks

Not for the same sort of price I'm afraid, but this kit will be ideal

I realise you get what you pay for however as its not going to be used on a daily basis, its just for the odd picture of my kids, family etc would something like this suffice for minimum use?

Garry, I really appreciate your suggestion and I will bear it in mind if I ever do want to turn my photography into more than a hobby but at this stage in time its probably a bit out of my price range considering how often it will be used!

No, that's a waste of money too:'(
If budget is low, get a couple of second hand hotshoe flashes from a camera shop (or cheap new ones) and get stands, umbrellas and bits from F.I.T.P. (sells his stuff on here)

Ive decided im going to get a wireless trigger with speedlites and stands, umbrella etc as thats the route most people ( and a couple of photographers I know ) have suggested may be best for me at this stage in time!

The one thing id like to know before I order is...do I need a wireless trigger with 3 receivers and 3 speedlites or would it be possible to get away with just 2? I have been told 3 is best so I can have a main light, a background light plus a fill light but as its just minimum use for my own personal hobby, could I cut down to 2?

Your advice would be appreciated!

I own 4 lights from lencarta and I would recomend them to you too. I had 1 light first then bought more... But if you want to go with flash guns then this is good choose for start.
I used to use 3x vivitar 283. one of them was connected with wireless trigger like this one:

as I did not had much money for more recievers I used photocell like this:

worked great and cheap :P
