Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone here uses one of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PhotoSEL-...trols_Softboxes_Diffusers&hash=item2a26e93953

Im interested in the assembly/disassemby of it, and wondering how small it folds down to? Do you have to install and remove the supporting posts each time?

Thanks for any help

It looks like you do, and that's not much fun if you have to pack things away each time. Look for the type that push up/down like an umbrella, eg Lencarta Profold or Bessel.

The Bessel softbox has the advantage of including a grid while the Lencarta offers it at an extra cost, both the Bessel and Lencarta have the advantage of being easy up designs which just requires you to exert some downward force to open it up like an umbrella.

I normally see the Photosel brand on low end gear but that softbox actually looks reasonable. Saying that the grid on the Bessel alone is worth the extra (even if it's too big) and octagonal softboxes aren't much fun to assemble especially octagonal ones with 8 poles so it's well worth considering the Lencarta or Bessel if keeping it assembled isn't an option.

There's also some less apparent advantages to buying a better brand, you'll have an easier time selling a good brand later on and if your needs change (you want a grid, you need a different adapter fitting) the better brands will offer you more options.

Grids are undoubtedly useful, but certainly not all the time.

There are two main uses: to control spill and direct the light at a specific area, and to prevent flare when used for back/side lighting where the face of the light is angled towards the camera. Then it's got to be good, and that means closely spaced, deeper vanes. Without that, controlling spill is less efficient and they're next to useless for reducing flare.

Recently bought one under promise of help from a fellow owner who describes them as a b*tch to assemble. Mine is the 120cm version as well, not braved it yet but probably will put it up over the weekend. Good value for money in my opinion, I got this on the strength of the 60cm x 80cm softbox which has been good to me.
