Hi all,

I have been asked to take individual photos of all the trophies with a ruler at the side (about 30 in number) at my golf club for insurance purposes. I am hoping this can be done outside if not then inside, depending on the weather.

I have a Canon 600D camera, 18/55 kit lens, 50mm 1.8 lens,Tamron70-300 f4-5.6 and 430 Canon speedlite flash.

I would be grateful if you good people could give me some tips/advice. I am thinking of setting the trophies up on a table with some kind of back drop and using the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens on tripod. Your thoughts please.
 
As it's for insurance purposes it doesn't need to be fine art so....

50mm at f8 + flash (diffused ideally)
Trophy individually on a table with a plain background behind and a clamp / stand to hold the ruler in place or an assistant. No tripod as it's not needed, shoot a trophy, replace it with the next one, recompose repeat until completed.
 
Seeing as the trophies are mainly silver what colour of background would be best?

Black.

To do it well is tricky, but as above, you don't need to do it well.
 
Try to ensure you position yourself so that there isn't a reflection of you/camera in the silver ware.
 
I'd use the tripod. It allows you to fix the position of the camera relative to the backdrop, you'll be able know exactly where you need to place the next trophy to get the shot you want. If the trophies are of different sizes I'd think about using the 18-55mm lens. You may then be able to fill the shot by zooming in or out a bit and not have to move the tripod at all.

My wife and daughter sell hand dyed wolls and woven items and asked me the photograph them. I fairly quickly found setting the camera on tripod made things easier.

The trophies will be different sizes.
I am thinking of using Centre-Weighted as the Exposure / Metering Mode, would this be the correct option?

You're using a flash in a controlled environment so manual mode as the exposure will not change.
 
Up date,
I have taken photos of the the trophies, which are passable for the purpose. I can see why Phil says "To do it well is tricky" Don't know how people take photos of trophies and not get reflections !.
