Sorry to blow my own trumpet here, but the Kent County Photographic Association annual Exhibition is on at Maidstone County Hall. I got 5 images accepted this year, incl one martial art, one point to point and one motorsport. Oddly they didn't take a single football pic :( So on the whole I was very pleased.

I went to the opening yesterday, and looking around thought the standard was pretty high in all categories. One thing that puzzled me was that there were two back-end shots, one mx and one horse racing over jumps which I picked out. I had always thought that back end views were 'uninteresting', so I was surprised to see them, and I think one got a 'highly commended'. There were a couple of other mx shots that I thought were better! Just goes to show you never know what the judge is looking for.

If anyone is down Kent way and has time to spare, it is worth a look.

Off to a footie match this afternoon.
Have a nice Easter

Congrats on the exhibition - how long is it running for and can you stick a link up if you have one, because I'm feeling lazy! :p :D

Regarding back shots, purely in my opinion, I think that they can work for mounted sports, because if done well they can place the viewer in the rider's seat, giving them a feeling of being there and engaging in the action. Although not a back shot itself, one of the better examples is Snaffles' 'Finest View in Europe'. With field sports you are on a pitch and imagining what is coming next is fairly limited, but with MX, Racing, PtoP, XC etc you have the scope of showing the challenge that the competitor faces. That's all going to come down to composition (eg not too much frame filling bum shots etc) as well though.

I'd guess that the true answer is that you have to be prepared to challenge the accepted 'rules' and if you think that a shot is going to work and can envisage the result, then go for it. Harking back to some points that Sportssnapper made, if you don't buck the trend occasionally and go against collected wisdom, then all sports photography will end up being formulaic and boring.

Well done Carol, I only managed to get three of my images accepted into the Welsh Salon, which is now on display at Blaenavon.

I'll try to post some snaps later
You may be right about different. Also noticed that a lot of pics that won awards were heavily photoshopped. Seems regular photography is going out of fashion??

on a side note to that comment will agree with you
,i had a photo that i took at my camera club ,did not put it in a comp as was not happy.
As that one part was in the dark ,was told i should have photo shopped it ,my answer was i want to get it right first time .

i would be really interested to see the motorsports shot that got featured. Not often you see a motorsports photo winning awards. Congrats!

Congrats Carol. I just had 4 of my images accepted to an exhibition that opened up here in Lancaster this week too. It's a great feeling isn't it? :)

Hi. Here's my motorsport pic - taken at Brands. Put in the mono pictorial category.

Excellent sports shot, and the monochrome treatment makes the main subject stand out.

thanks for the comments. The KCPA seems to attract a growing selection of images, I think near to 1000 and there is only space for about 250, so I suppose it can be tough to get accepted. I've managed it 5 years on the run so far.
Here's a quick compact shot of the back-end horse. I like it as an image, just wondered about the 'highly commended'. I've never got a 'high commended', and since this is obviously a remote camera shot, I suppose I've got to be in with a chance with a behind the goal shot next year, eh?

Another great shot and very worthy of the award, what set up did you use to capture this shot.

Congratulations Carol .

I know you have worked hard this year trying to get the shots you wanted and it has paid off for you, so perhaps a lesson and inspiration for us all.

Well done on getting your photos accepted:clap:

On the subject of back-ends; I have to say that I did really like the image on one of the Marathon threads of the three female runners from behind as it did tell a different story of the event. The horsey image above again is a good one. I think you stand a good chance of getting a rear goalkeeper shot in for next year..... I'm thinking diving save in the rain with water droplets etc.

So maybe back-ends are the new front-ons for 2011:shrug:

I was just thinking the same....

... maybe we should start a 'Best Bums' thread to rival that in Nude & Glamour'!! :D

the motorsport is mine, the horse one was on display, not mine. The motorsport was through the chainlink with my 70-200. Not into equine-stuff, really.

I'm so looking forward to next season, except I am not loving the idea of in the wet and cold once more
On the subject of rear ends, I seem to see more than enough at the footie to last me a lifetime!
One from yesterday, never seen text on a bum at footie before, reminds me of UFC.

Thanks, Martin. Hope to get to do some more rugby next season, and may be make it over to Essex.

I'm on the Essex / Suffolk border - can we have a sporting meet?? Pre-season / midweek
