Hi guys I'm just having a play with TextExpander and I was wondering what the most common abbreviations you pro's use when captioning.

I've had a look on Getty Sports and their captioning and found the following on a Liverpool photo

"Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool competes with Lars Jacobsen of West Ham during the Barclays Premier League match between West Ham and Liverpool at Boleyn Ground on..."

How would something like this be abbreviated?

I was thinking of

L18 (Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool)
cw (competes with)
WH18 (Lars Jacobsen of West Ham)
during (this would fill in the fixture, ground and date details etc)

Is that on the right track or would you guys do it differently

Also I think it'd be great to have a thread where we could share the most common abbreviations you pro's use, this would be a great learning resource for amateurs like myself

for example

itb = is tackled by

What do you think?

I agree with your choice for players, all I would say is not to use capitals for them, easier to just have them lower case in my experience. I have to confess, I've never thought of adding the players team after his name like that, I've been using, for example /n4/ of /n/ to say Kevin Nolan of Newcastle United FC.:bonk:

I did try doing codes for certain situation, battle for the ball etc, but in the end I just prefer typing them up myself as I go along, don't want to have to many codes to remember, it's the squad numbers and team names that are the most important to me. I know there are other who do it though, and I can certainly see how it would be useful for some.

As for the details of the game, I just program the IPTC data before each game to include that on my stationery (competition, date and stadium) as default on every shot as I export them off the card and then just add the details discussed above to the beginning of that.

Edit - This is in Photomechanic.

What if Leeds play Liverpool next season l18 will be Dirk Kuyt and also Sanchez Watt. Usually there are two or three letters to identify the teams :)

so i have liv18 and lu18 :)

Yeah I agree about using lowercase, that was a typo on my part

As for the details of the game. Which part of the IPTC do you put this in?

Totally agree with that. But as I'm just starting out I was just gonna stick with single letters like

f10 (Farsley AFC's Gareth Grant) etc

obviously if ever get to agency standard Liverpool would be something like LFC and Leeds LU maybe?

I enter it into the 'Caption' section. So the box will have this in it (plus the Agency details of course)

during the Barclays Premier League Match between Newcastle United FC and West Ham United FC at St James' Park, Newcastle on January 5th 2011 in Newcastle, England
Team, Competition, Date and Agency details also go in the Headline section too.

Phil, do a quick search for PM in here. There's a thread from about 6-9 months ago that talks about exactly this, and has some handy tips in it.

I would do it, but I'm on my mobile atm.

I use two letters so Liverpool would be li and Leeds lu. I also create two sets of code replacements. The first one would be \li18\ and read Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt and the second would be \,li18\ and would just read Dirk Kuyt. Quite a few others such as \t\ (tackled by), \b\ (battles with), \c1\ (celebrates scoring his sides first goal), \c2\ (celebrates scoring his sides second goal) etc

Brilliant examples there, just what I was looking for

Cheers Mark i've had a look at that thread and some great suggestions in there also

I think that Graham just refined most of them in that last post!!

if you are going to buy a mac, use a program called Typinator, it's the same principle as code replacements but work in all other programmes and you don't need all the /

phil, i was shown graham's way by a 3rd party and i use it all the time does get a bit confusing when / if you get 92 teams in notepad but as i say graham's your man

Just to add to this thread, there is an XL formula that will create the code replacements for Photo Mechanic. You just highlight and select the squad then copy and paste into the sheet. This creates the codes which you then copy onto notepad. Do this as the season progresses to build up the leagues you work in. Takes less than a minute to do a squad. Not sure how low down the leagues Football Squads go as I only as far as BSP.
