I have read a little about this event.. Has anybody ever been? It looks enormous... I also heard that they don't sell anything! Be interested in hearing what you know and your experiences of going.
Photokina is open to consumers now, though it is very trade and professional orientated. That just means there will be a lot of stuff there that you have no interest in, unless processing lab machinery does it for you.
It's a huge show, with massive stands and lots going on in a dozen or so halls. It'll take you a week to see it all, if you have comfortable shoes, but the big consumer brands are usually grouped together in a few halls, though I'd allow a couple of days to do those properly and like to chat.
TBH 95% of everything most people want to see is at The Photography Show, in March at the NEC. And you can buy stuff there, even grab a bargain
Edit: your partner will be bored witless in a couple of hours. Tons of shops close by though, amazing cathedral, Cologne in the cold and rain... beer!
I didn't know that the public are admitted now, sorry about that.
Just to add to what Richard has said, last time I was there I spent 4 days in just one hall (lighting) and still didn't manage to speak to everyone I wanted to. BTW, it helps to be a linguist too - stands always seem to have English speaking people there, but it can be slow going when they are basically just acting as interpretors for the people who have detailed product knowledge
