Photography Website Domain Name - Your Advice

1st or 2nd but not 3rd ... or choose a domain that doesn't use your name.

Or maybe a domain name with a nondescript name, that way you will have more options for use of the domain in the future :)

Get a domain name with photo or photography in it, so Google understands what the website is about a little better. Real names in domains are more vanity than real use (unless you have a name like Henri Cartier-Bresson, of course!)

www.photomonty.co.uk means more to folk searching Google for a photographer than www.montagu.co.uk

The shorter the domain name the better, but most short names have gone. And I wouldn't really worry about anything other than .com or .co.uk.

But, with domain name registration being so cheap, why not get them all? Register your own name to stop anyone else doing so and point that domain (and any others that you buy) at the main domain that you wish to actually use.

Browse to a primary domain such as www.the-it-dept.co.uk, or to a "parked" domain such as www.theitdept.co.uk, and they both show exactly the same website. The secondary domain is simply used to stop anyone else registering it.

But they have to be renewed every two years or so !

They do need to be renewed, but the actual renewal for 2 years registration is from about £6 for .co.uk, £16 for .com (prices will vary, depending on supplier).

Don't register 100's of domains, just 2 or 3 key names.

The webspace provided for the main domain is the "expensive" part. That'll cost up to £100 a year, again depending on the supplier and how much they do for you.

I'd go for yourname.com (then you can have as many subdomains as you like (or subdirectories)

So photo.yourname.com or yourname.com/photo/ ...

Can anyone recommend a URL that includes my name that hasn't been taken?

As above. Register a few variations, then decide on a main one to use. You can always change the sub domain, for instance I use photo.myname.co.uk.
