Morning folks….. After seeing some images from the Highlands of Scotland and it being somewhere I’ve wanted to visit and photograph for a while I’ve decided I’m going to look in to it. I fly home from holiday and have 2 days spare before having an operation which I’m not sure how long I’ll be out of action for so my plan is to Drive up first thing in the morning maybe leave home at around 4am and stop over maybe in the car or in a B&B. I’m hoping to get out with the camera from mid-day until sunset then catch maybe some nightscape / Astro photography before getting a couple hours sleep then back up for sun rise then head home for late afternoon so I can get sorted for the operation. All this is weather dependant.
I’m looking for some locations from anyone who’s shot up there.
My main Area will be the Glencoe region and my main subject would be Buachaille Etive Mor So …… I’m after more locations like this.
Any tips advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I'm tagging @ST4 as he has a love affair with Glencoe and the area round it, so hopefully he'll be along soon to give you better advice. Come prepared for all sorts of weather and make sure you have quality protection against midges! Good luck!

Mid-day until sunset. If you could do sunsrise to sunset you'd be laughing as the first light of the day at the coupall river and buchaille is what you like. Its not an afternoon location, you'll shoot straight into the direction of the high sun. Ideally you want to shoot west.

The classic shout of the Buchaille needs to be taken early to mid AM. You turn off the A82 at the road sign posted Glen Etive, and about 600m down there is a car park, and a worn path. You walk up the worn muddy path.

Its ok but you want first light here

On the way North on the A82 you will cross Rannoch Moor. The best views are to your left and the Lochan on the left. Park in a layby and walk to the loch side, there is not a chance you won't get a great view.

Near Midday, I would take a walk up the Devils staircase and to the hills.

Evening wise, I would follow the instructions and details of my three summer blogs this year.

It will probably be raining so expect to take something like this

I'm planning on visiting Eilean Donan Castle possibly mid day also'

I'll be in the area for sunrise so I'll have sunset the night I get there then sunrise the morning before heading back'

Gutted it's such a short trip but I have to do this before my operation

Glencoe to Eilean Donan is about a four hour round trip, so if you've only got a short time I'd recommend concentrating on the one area.

The river Etive waterfalls and Loch Etive are other options close by. And if you're looking for a B&B the King's House Hotel is ideally located.

Good advice I reckon.

Glen Coe and Glen Etive would keep you busy for days!

Well I'm sad to say that due to my back getting worse in the run up to my operation I didn't get up to Glencoe BUT.... Its booked for the last weekend in March ill arrive Saturday morning and leave Monday lunch time.

Will start the planning after Christmas

So I may keep returning for information.... Thanks to all who have posted.

Well it's that time ..... As of Friday I'm heading to Glasgow with the other half then Saturday till Monday afternoon I'll be staying near Glencoe! Been looking forward to this trip for a long time! At this point the weathers not looking great but hopefully a few breaks at the right time and I'll be happy!

Anyway I'm looking forward to exploring some of the area!

Any tips or advice throw them my way thanks

No tips or advice as Iv never been there but would love to try, so Im following your thread to pick up some hints for myself. You must be so excited right now! Good luck mate, hope the weather stays favourable and its everything youve hoped it would be. Look forward to seeing your results

This book may help if your stuck, albeit a few popular places. The Photographer's Guide to Scotland - Skye, Glen Coe & the Trossachs

if your looking for a place for a pint and some food , I would recommend the clachaig inn , awesome wee boozer .. glen coe and the suroundings areas are a photographers paradise ,

Timing, as they say, is everything :(

Weather looks to be turning on Friday - I know because I have some winter expeditioning planned on Nevis for Saturday. Which looks like it might not be Nevis now...

Don't get me wrong, Glencoe on a bad day (weatherwise) is still an amazing place, but it'd be such a shame if you aren't able to see it in its full glory. It sounds like you've booked accommodation but I'd suggest looking at Metcheck etc. to see if there are any local microclimates nearby (further East?) which you could travel to and have a better chance of clearer skies...

Just my 2p.

Take a fishing rod. Loch Etive is an excellent venue for a wide variety of sea fish.

I was up there a few weeks ago in the Mid day with very atmospheric sky, It was my first visit and i had a little explore around the area and got myself the banker shots, Will be shooting more the next time go up. Few shots below
