Hi everyone

I am currently studying at university in Oxford and just wondered if there was anyone who knows the area that could recommend some good places to get some shots? Of course there is the main city with all of the beautiful buildings but I was wanting to go somewhere to take a few more" nature" type photos.

I am limited to getting around on a bus or train as we are not allowed to bring our cars up. I only started taking photos a little over a week ago so not really sure right now which direction I want to go in but at the moment am leaning more towards nature/landscapes than buildings.

Also sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum! are there any specific forums about locations?
Thank you in advance! Happy weekend all.

Hi Bryony. You could try the canal. Boats, wildlife, landscap and slow action shots.

The area around Christ Church Meadow has lots of photo opportunities. You can walk down the bank of the River Cherwell and then along the Thames. Lots of diverse wildlife and landscapes to play around with and all withing a 10 min walk from the city center.

Hope this helps.

Ian

Thanks great suggestions! Have no plans for tomorrow so I'll go on a little exploring trip :)

Hi Bryony. I don't know Oxford, or any other part of England for that matter, very well but I'd suggest taking a much broader approach for now. Don't limit yourself. Just take photographs of anything and everything that catches your eye. Get to know your camera and its controls inside out. Learn about the relationship between ISO, shutter speed and aperture, and how they work together in different situations. Develop your understanding of light - this is critical - composition, contrast and focus. It doesn't matter if you bin a lot of shots for now, you can learn as much from the failures as the successes. You'll reach a point when you know what works and what doesn't, and you can 'see' the photograph before you even raise the camera.

There's plenty of time for specialising later. Good luck, and enjoy yourself. That's what it's really all about!

Get on the bus to wallingford, get off at Berinsfield, there's an old roman road thats fairly picturesque out along there.
Or Dorchester, the lake down there is rather nice.

Hi Bryony, I live just a few miles away. There are lots of places around Oxford for nature photography, including the various botanical gardens, Port meadow, South Parks and of course the various canals and waterways. Hop on a train up to Lower Heyford and walk along by the canal and Cherwell river, or see if you can get a bus (or cycle!) up to Shotover woods on the south of the city, or Islip to the east.

I live in Somerton, just up from the Heyfords, and the valley is beautiful almost all year round.

I know its been a while since I saw Blackbird Leys (police camera action not withstanding) but I dont recall it being that pretty... or a great place to wander with anything expensive
