Hi All..

I'm looking to set off on a "mission" this weekend. I live in Gloucester and want to board a train with my bike and do a bit of cycling somewhere as well as take some photos!

I'm going to make a day of it so I'm looking for people who live in Gloucester, or know of places aroundan hour on the train away that I could get to that has some nice scenery around.

Many thanks in advance.

My ex-girl friend is at uni in Cheltenham and we used to go for walks around a couple of large lakes and a park and stuff that was near her halls of residence. I used to take my camera around there which was always fun.

Might not be as far out of the way as you want to go though...

1. Train to Worcester, cycle to Evesham (lunch at the Fleece (NT pub) in Bretforton) and cycle back to Gloucester. Could cycle via Winchcombe - steam trains.

2. Train to Newport, cycle back to Gloucester, either along the Severn or through the Forest of Dean (which would be better for you depends on bike and legs).

3. Train to Swindon, cycle back to Gloucester through the Cotswolds.

4. Train to Hereford via Worcester and Malvern, cycle back to Gloucester. Suggest lunch at the Green Man at Fownhope (sticky toffee pudding to die for).

Obviously it depends on how far you want to cycle. Most of these routes could be adapted for a shorter bike ride.

Oh wow!

I see you've done these a few times?

Thanks for the feedback Woadrage. I'll investigate these this evening. But the Evesham one sounds rather good.

I'm quite fit but haven't done much cycling in the past. My bike is also about 6 years old - it's a Claud Butler so no idea how good it is lol.

I'm sure I can manage though!

Hi Amnesia

I've not done these trips myself but they look sensible/do-able from a map. I normally live in Redditch so I do know most of these places.

http://www.thefleeceinn.co.uk/ - Worcestershire CAMRA pub of the year 2006. Good food.

If you go to Newport, loop round by Caerleon for the Roman amphitheatre and there's a sort of craft/boutique market up an alleyway with some amazing tree sculptures.

I can feel a SW England (AKA Gloucester / Bristol) meet comming up

My back garden?

Or cycle out to Haw Bridge Inn next to the R Severn at, er, Haw Bridge.

For great views cycle south through Harescombe, turn off towards Whiteshill but, when halfway there, turn west towards Haresfield. Some fanstastic views along there. On a fine day you have a wonderful view across the Severn and can see Wales. Oh. I knew there was a flaw :p

If you take that route, make sure your brakes are in good order.
