Does photography in the winter become harder? What aspects of photography do? What becomes easier if anything? I'm taking photo after photo and I'm not getting the desired results at the minute and it's leaving my hands blooming cold after being out there for a while! I still have a long way to go. ;)

I find taking pics in the winter more enjoyable. The dramatic weather, low sun, great sunsets around this time, etc. Get yourself a set of thermals and some quality gloves and you will find life easier.

Chris :)

its the winter light you need to capture...gone is the glare and shadow stuff
now its the mist and suggestive lighting
frost and morning mists

a bacon sanny
and a kip in the heather

God!!...i love winter:thumbs:

You're all mad
I hate the winter...hate the cold...hate the grey skies...hate the 'only four hours of useable light'...hate having to wear ten layers to keep warm...hate cold feet...hate the heating bills...hate cold starts in the car...hate scraping ice off the car...hate ice and salt all over the roads making the car really filthy every five minutes...

Hate it...

Love the sun...
Love wearing T-shirts and shorts all year round..
Love blue skies...
Love pretty girls in 'not very much' clothing...
Love long evenings when Golden Hour last for three...

Winter...? Ban it, I say...

Don't you also risk getting shot at though, Rob?

I find each season presents you with a chance to try different apects of photography. Winter provides a sunrise at a reasonable hour and the long shadows can work very well in your favour. The everchanging british weather can be cruel one day and kind the next.

liking it over there then Arkady :D

Oh yes...
Missing the car though...and the GF - could do with some real sofa-cuddles right now *ahem*...

Bit chilly at night here now - we broke out the softee-jackets today...brrrrr...

I much prefer the Autumn & Winter months. The sun is low for so much of the day and getting to and from locations for sunrise and sunset doesn't involve camping out, getting up at silly o'clock or getting home late.

If its landscapes you are shooting, then try Neutral Graduated filters. I find there is a bigger contrast in the winter, with dark foregrounds and bright skys. The filters will allow you to shoot more, where the sunlight is not present in the whole picture.

pfft... any fool can rough-it...

:D

absolutely

you know i just love this pleasure

I hate winter - the fishing is pants, it gets dark early so the flash is on all the time, plus it's cold and I hate wading in freezing water

If you can catch a sunny winters day in the hills you can't get a better pic I recon:D

How about a few winter pics from the lake district, hope you like em:thumbs:
All as were taken on the day with my trusty old Sony DSC P120, no post processing at all:)

This is my first winter with the SLR and im looking forward to it :)

Im not a great fan of the cold but hey....I live in Britan!

lol I like both and for entirely different reasons. As someone with low blood pressure I feel the cold something rotten and hate cold wet days. I love crisp and clear, hate cold and wet! I hate getting up in the dark and getting home in the dark.

But I'm also a lazy cow and hate getting up at stupid o'clock in the summer only to find there IS no lovely early morning light, or even worse travelling to a location to have to get up at stupid o'clock only to find there is no lovely early morning light.

So I choose to shoot people instead and in the winter I can come indoors :)

I like a simple life. :)

You and me both...I've been to Norway where the -28C cold was crisp and lovely...beautiful skies and scenery...
The coldest I've ever been was on Salisbury Plain in March/April, where it was about +5C...the damp-cold of the UK just seeps into the bones...

Winter is OK except when there are seemingly endless spells of dull flat lighting that leaves all outdoors looking featureless (like today).

On another site I visit, someone from Norway was talking about taking sunrise pictures in the winter. He said that after you have taken the shot, you can wait for a few minutes then take the sunset - sometimes you don't need to move the tripod!

I think he was exagerating a bit but at least we get more light in the winter than the few hours they get in Norway!

EDIT: Just had a look. Sunrise at about 9:00, sunset at about 3:00 so around six hours of daylight (on December 21st).

Steve.

in the winter? not necessarily. in the rain? certainly.

the last 2 times ive covered an event for a local club its rained. the first time a lot of the images were mediocre at best thanks to the visible rain in the shots. the last time there was severe weather warning and the rain was blowing in sideways at 20mph so we cancelled attendance.

got another one sunday, anyone care to guess what the weather forecast is?

Winter in London is utterly awful. disgusting.

I wish I'm somewhere in French Alps, or at least Scotland. We suffer the same coldness ,low tempreture but they get snow covered landscape.

Depends how far north you are. Norway goes up a long way and bits of it are inside the Arctic Circle.

I've got some of my favourite pictures in winter. Snow acts like a reflector, you get fantastic flocks of birds, great landscapes and you can wrap up warm

I had to go on a business trip to Olso the week before Christmas and although it was lovely those sunrise and sunset times are actually a bit optimistic. It didn't really get light till 10am and it started to get dark again about 2.30. I think they are measuring the start of one process and the end of the other to squeeze the max daylight figures out of it. :)

I think the coldest I've been out is was up a mountain in Evian in Jan -27deg and Scotland one year when we got down to -17deg. There was a famous pic of a stag in the high street! Got snowed in for three days. :) Ah, those were the days :)

Winter - light can be good but it's too cold to sleep in the campervan and the nights are soooooooooo looooooonggggg.........

Diesel heating and a laptop hooked up to the van stereo for surround sound :)

Been in Scotland for a week in Jan two out of the last three years in the camper and can happily sit in a T shirt watching a movie. Nice chilled glass of white and have fun trying to move it in the snow in the morning :)

Have to admit that I find myself taking fewer pictures outdoors in the winter, not that I take many outdoors anyway.

I also find that when it's been snowing, you have to get out early to get any shots, cause if you leave it til later, it's all been walked on :( ah the joys of living in the city... at least in Hicksville there was hardly anyone around!

I hate the cold full stop, would much prefer sunshine!!

However looking forward to first winter with my camera so hopefully get some nice moody shots of the sky

HA, and this from the man who is moving to Germany:cuckoo:

Winter in Germany is fine - cold and crisp, not grey and damp. Plus they know how to deal with it - all the services continue to run normally.
Last winter we had lows of -27C near to us...But it only felt like about 0...Only on one day was there any drama on the roads...

On balance, Winter in the UK sucks the snot from a dead-dog's nose...

Couldn't help but giggle... 3 snowflakes over here and the world grinds to a halt!
