Name: Photography in Theory and Practice Course
Place: Bethnal Green Centre
Level: Intermediate
Weeks: 10, 2h/week (evening)
Teacher: Dominic Brown
Cost: £150
Website: http://www.learningladder.co.uk/
Review: This was my first photography course but it's not for beginners. You need to know how to use your DSLR camera (although you get some help if you ask). The structure of the course was to learn about the theory and then next week use the knowledge in practice. Scheme work:
lesson 1: introduction, health and safety
lesson 2: theory about documentary photography: image construction, rule of thirds, signs and semiology, decisive moment, famous street photographers' work
lesson 3: practice: 2h in Trafalgar Square taking documentary shots
lesson 4: visit in National Portrait Gallery to take notes (looking at lighting and composition of paintings and photos)
lesson 5: practice: studio portraits
lesson 6: practice: still life, macro in studio
lesson 7: course review, theory: architecture photography
lesson 8: practice: trip to Royal Festival Hall - architecture and documentary shots
lesson 9: project work
lesson 10: project assessment and open critic, Q and A

Course was very well organized, teacher had a big knowledge was always there to help you although there were to many students hence there was small time for individual advice. There was not enough time in studio. We had to do a final project (but nobody cared about it) and we had to chose our best shots to show at the exhibition at the end (actually very good, with food, music and alcohol; lots of people; nice place). I would recommend it for everyone who knows how to operate the camera but don't have any theoretical knowledge, there is a course for beginners as well - same teacher.
Rating: 8/10

I'm doing Certificate in Image Capture (C&G 7511) level 3 with Mark Burden now. It is one year course, 3h/week (99 hours in total), £550 or £50 concession (if you earn below 15k/year or receive some benefits), Bethnal Green Centre.
So far I'm not happy about the course, it's not organized at all. Out of 10 lessons now, I feel that I learned something only on 3 (about flash, legal stuff, metering and white balance). The rest I just feel I sit and do nothing or he just send us outside to shoot.

I'm interested to do one of the courses next year:
- HNC & HND Photography at Havering College
- Foundation Degree in Professional Photography or BTEC HNC in Photography at City Westminster College
- Photography Foundation Degree Level 5 at City and Islington College.

Do you have any information about above courses or about other HND/HNC/foundation degree or BA in London?

Brief Review:

I did the 4 day course costing £595. This course does what it says on the tin; I entered the course a complete newbie to using my 450D (except in auto mode). After going on this course I understand almost everything on my camera; every menu option and shooting option, where to use them, when, how, etc..

The teacher was awesome, very passionate about photography and very motivating and inspiring. The assignments were great and each day we were given something to do and bring in for the next day. This helped put everything we had learnt into practice.

My only gripes were these: 1) I am now in the position where I want to know more about the theory (composition, what makes a good shot, etc) and 2) post production using Photoshop, Aperture etc.

However, the course did cover the basics of these two points, but its main aim was to get you on your way to mastering your DSLR, which it achieved in spades. Highly recommended.

Mine, an informal day course on the south Downs south of London. It's not for me to objectively review though, but plenty of positive, encouragements comments left by past students. Details in the main menu. From a trainers viewpoint it is all about supplying what the market wants and that can take time, trial and error to establish and it rarely stands still.
Mine are pitched at those who do not have time for an evening course and want to spend the day directly with a professional.
Professionals are going further and further afield now, some of my clients are going out to Egypt in January when the market goes quiet, and spending substantial sums, combining training with a holiday after. There are lots of excellent courses out there for all levels.

I'd be v interested to hear what people take away from a training module most, my students seem to benefit most from dramatically increased confidence and the ability to start determining for themselves what, and how to, constructs a good image.

Decent/handy idea for a thread!

Talk University → I'm considering a range of photography degrees this October & high on my current list are Middlesex & the University of the Arts London. I want to do a course that provides both studio & darkroom practise with a lot of portrait orientated work.

This is a great thread. I'm really keen to get on a photography course in central London (am Hackney based)

595 for four days however is just not an option for me. Are there more reasonable options out there ?

Tom, Already mentioned previously. Suggest you look at City Lit in Holborn. This link works for current courses. http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/photography

Good choice of daytime, evening and weekends. I've done a few of their courses. Beginners, studio lighting, travel photography, London architecture.

Currently considering a documentary photography course running for 10 weeks, one morning a week from end January. About £250, so probably less that £10/hour. Generally 10 -14 people per course and quite likely that you'll meet some decent people.

Thanks gazzag. Courses look good, and are very reasonable. Really good to get recommendations from people that have already been on courses.
