I'm after some advice really... I'm off to the York Tattoo convention tomorrow and thought it might be a good chance to get some pics different to what I'm used to taking. I have a nikon d3100 with its kit 18-55 and a sigma 70-300 (which I'm guessing won't be much use) but that's about it. Any help and ideas as to settings etc would be gratefully received as I've never really shot people before.

Another question is how to go about taking photos of randoms in the first place. Is there some kind of etiquette to it? Or just be a bit more sensitive about what I photograph?

Thanks guys (and gals!)

To be honest, it's difficult to offer advice, without some knowledge of the venue, time of day, etc. Is it going to be indoors, possibly low light? Are you after detail shots or wider people shots?

Regarding etiquette, I may be making an assumption here, but given it's a tattoo convention, I don't think you run into many shy people :D In fact, I'd think, that there will be many who will be more than willing to get their photo taken.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. Would love to see to see the images and more than happy to give any advice that may be helpful.

One last thing, enjoy your trip to NY.

As John says.. simply no way anyone can advise you on settings without knowing the light source or indeed anyhting else..

one thing I would say....there will be a lot of people taking pics.. and I do mean a lot from camera phones to dslr ... just follow the pack :)

Hi guys, I see what you mean about the lack of info- it was late last night and I wasn't really paying attention. Lighting wise, it's being held at York racecourse, all indoor and most likely strip lighting (haven't been before).

I'd like to try a range of shots, close ups of tattoos being done would be cool but the odd crowd one will probably crop up. I know this isn't exactly narrowing things down but I think I'll try a few things and see how they work out.

Thanks so far, if I manage anything worth posting I'll put it here first :)

And John, it's York in the UK, I wish it was NY!!
