Hi! I'm working for a web design company and have been asked to take photos of sports jerseys for a client.

I have a great camera (Canon EOS 5D) which is more than up to the job and a great lens (50mm f1.2L) which I think is good for the job too! My problem is that until now I've been more of an outdoor portrait/ landscape amateur photographer!

I usually avoid using flash at all costs and as a result I'm not sure how to tackle this project!

So, I've a few questions...

Firstly, is my lens the right one for the job? (I only own the one so far!)
Do I need to buy a flash gun?
Should I purchase a white background and use special lighting to photograph the shirts on a mannequin?

I'd really appreciate any advice offered. Thanks! :)

I'd start by asking the client what they want
then work back to what kit you need!

Thanks Mike... I've already done that and they've suggested a few competitors sites that they like the look of. These all have very white backgrounds and the shirts are posed on headless mannequins - which is why I wondered about the lighting and other equipment :) I'm a real newbie to this unfamiliar territory as you can probably tell!

What I've been thinking is it's probably very similar to taking an indoor portrait, in which case I try to use natural daylight and no flash... I've considered popping into Jessops to see what they'd advise but I don't want to end up being talked into buying a lot of unnecessary stuff that I may not get the chance to use much...

daylight (+ reflector) is ok
but you can't rely on it!

might be worth getting a flashgun (I'd suggest 580 EX II)

worth contacting Kerso on this forum as he does good deals

you have a decent background?
mebbe 2nd flash to light it to make sure it's overexposed!

that'll be 2p!
