As Farsley AFC don't have a game this Saturday I'm on the look out for a local Rugby team to photograph. I've tried the ones nearest to me such as Stanningley and Bramley but they are both playing away.

Anyway I've come across Leeds Corinthians RUFC their website is http://www.leedscorinthiansrufc.co.uk/

Do I need any kind of accreditation to photograph this level of Rugby? Or would it be ok just to phone them and ask if I can go along and shoot the game?

I should add I have Insurance and £2M liability

Cheers

if i was going there i would just turn up should not be a problem in fact over the years i hvae just turned up at places like otley and rotherham and had no problem getting in but if you have a contact name drop them an email and let them know your coming. [out of intrest do you have a conference photo number / licisence ?]

I would think it would be ok to just ring them and ask to go along, I cant really see from their website what league they play in but judging by the age of some of the players they seem like an amature team like the team i play for. So I dont think you will need any accreditation to Photograph this level of rugby

Morning Phil, nice to see your going to shoot a proper sport now.

Anyway I have been trying to see what league they play in and it looks like you wont need any accreditation for this level.

My team - Southend RFC - play in National League Div2 (S), which is 3 divisions from th Aviva Prem and we don't need anything to shoot there.

I dont have any PLI as I am covered by the clubs Insurance....cheaper that way:lol:

I personally would ring them and ask if it is ok to go along.

Good luck Phil and have a enjoyable day.

Phone or email... I have never ever just turned up for anything I am photogrpahing.. far better if they know you are coming and who you are..

Cheers guys, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time like I would be if I tried to go Photograph Leeds UTD etc

Will deffo give them a ring and see if they mind me popping along.

Tep Martin this'll be my first go at Rugby Union, not totally clued up on the rules as I've only ever shot Rugby League before  Where would you guys recommend sitting for the game. At Rugby League I always sat behind the goals, but where best for Union as I'd love to get some good line out shots

You need to move about, you will get some good action by the try/goal area. But also walking the line as you can get some good shots of lineouts and scrums. With the scrums i would try and get a shot Pre-engagement when they are stareing at each other

Phil, dont just turn up, it xcan be embarassing, if the pitch is on council owned ground you can turn up no problem but if the club own their ground outright they are within their rights to tell you to go take a jump, best advice, ring just to make sure 0113-271 1574

Phil, Stanningley RL are at home at the Arthur Miller Stadium against Rochdale Mayfield. KO Saturday 2.30pm

Also bear in mind that a lot of these clubs charge £5 or £10 to get in to watch the game.

So ask if you can skip the charge if they have one.

What lens/es will you be using?

Hi Rob, I'll be using the 300 2.8 (maybe with 1.4xTC) on ID3 and 135L on the other 1D3. I also have a 35 1.4L which I could take along

Hi Gary, just checked on the Stanninlgley website and it says they are away to Eccles & Salford this Saturday. Where did you read they were playing at home?

I usually start with the t/c on if the light is good enough, but end up taking it off as the game progresses (they don't put the floodlights on at the grounds I visit). The shorter lens on a second body is handy, especially at set plays where you can move closer to the action. Good luck

I ahve only ever seen one photogrpaher do this at rugby... he runs up and down the lines and is older and fitter than me :) I doubt he gets anyhting better than anyone else and all his pics are from a standing postion.... one of the nicest people you could ever meet so I wont say anymore about his shooting style :)

Everyone else picks a spot and sticks to it... first rule of sport "don't chase the game"

As for where to sit, if its anything like the grounds in the Nat League 2 then you can wander anywhere you want, and NO I dont mean on the bloody pitch .

With Southend I know the strength of the opposing teams so I can judge whether we are going to be defending most of the game or if we play a team where we are going to stick a lot of points on. If your not sure give your self 10-15mins to decide where the action is going to be most.

I've taken them from nearly everywhere its possible to take them from.

I have heard Tony say this on numerous occasions and I have said it to myself on many occasions, but I have had the odd inckling that we were near to scoring a try the way the play was going, so I went to the other side of the pitch near the try line and got the 'shot' that nobody else got. Well chuffed, but it doesn't happen every time.

if your doing rl pick an end if its ru well at the level its anybodies guess i alway remember i chap called gordon bunney who freelanced for the yp many years ago who produced some of the best ru pic ever published telling me look for the rucks and mauls as thats the only time the ball not in the airbut were talking 15/20 years ago and the games changed since then.

There are acceptions to every rule :) general opinion is after 10 mins if theres no action your end and you move to the other end.. someone will do a fantastic overhead kick and celebration right in front of where you just left... But if you stay where you are you twiddle your thumbs...

Long lens + short lens.. gets you both ends :)

Scroll down and it says the Eccles game postponed and they are now at home against Rochdale, hmmmmmm, ring the club to make sure

Failing that you could take in a Challenge Cup game, Milford Marlins v Gateshead Thunder, amateur v Pro but should be very close.

Dont chase the game, you'll look a pillock when you get nowt but will be a stone lighter.

Which means you will feel hungry and that means going into the clubhouse and having pie, chips and beans

Phil

As you are doing this for experience I suggest the following.

1) Choose an end and go behind the try line (near the corner flag).
Look in the league table and see which is the stronger team. Get at
the end they are playing towards.

2) If the light is good use the 1.4tx. When there is a stoppage in play near your end put down the 300 and get ready with the 135mm.

3) At half time stick the 300 away somewhere safe and just use the 135 on one body and the 35 on another. Prowl the touch lines (I am guessing that you'll be behind barriers) and get photos of the scrums. Look for the front row as the crouch down. Look for the jumpers in the line outs and follow them as the go up.

Do this from straight on. The next time do it so that when they catch the ball and turn towards the scrum half you are shooting straight on.

Shots of the flankers at the scrum, second rows binding before they join the scrum.

4) If it's been raining there should be lots of opportunities for muddy face shots.

5) Enjoy it.

I'm covering a local club game this weekend, 200-400 / D3s, 70-200 / D700 and I'll take along a flash plus a wide angle for the end team shots.

Good advice from Bigrob, most importantly

How did you find the 200-400 at the rugby James? i'm not sure it will cope under lights......

The game wasn't under lights as I had first thought, the light was good, I was using 1/800 in most shots with the D3s the noise levels aren't even there. Great lens I'll post some results in a couple of hours just sifting through them now.
