Hi,
Another location question! I wondered if anyone had experience of photographing on Norwich station? I would like to do some long exposure stuff there, trying to get the blurred 'ant like' trail of people coming off a train.....
As ever they have no contact numbers, I can drop in but just wondered if anyone had done any shooting there.

Cheers

Chapter and verse on railway station photography, courtesy of the Network Rail website - here

I was photographing at Maidenhead station recently. Nothing interesting - just testing the AF tracking performance of a lens. (125mph trains are good for that.) I was required to sign in and out, and had a short safety briefing. Nothing onerous, and quite sensible really.

They are selling platform tickets at Norwich these days (50p IIRC), but many of the staff will allow you on the platform if you ask nicely, although they may get a little antsy about the tripod unless you're well out of the way.

I have never come across a station asking for a safety briefing as an amateur- Did you present them with a press card or something? I suppose if it was a silly size lens they may have been a little more wary :)

Final point- I'd strongly advise having a printout of the Network Rail guidelines with you, and be prepared to stand your ground. I've run across some right **** people in my 15 years photographing railways, who think they know everything.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the replies! I will print out the Network rail guidelines, the venue will be an interesting one.

I never knew they openly welcomed photography and the use of tripods at train stations (as long as you're out of the way). That's good to know!

They're supposed to, but as per my post above, many, many staff haven't read the rules or got the message
I've heard everything from photography being banned by the Railway Byelaws (Don't even mention it!), to it being against the company T&Cs (Ridiculous- The only time they might even have a point is if you're majorly commercializing things, and then you ought to have spoken to head office) as reasons to stop taking photos.

That includes the BTP for that matter....

Sorry but I found this question hilarious, there's never less than half a dozen trainspotters with cameras at my local station, day or night, rain or shine :geek:
