Hi

I can always find a reason to go to the office in Inverness so I thought I'd kill two birds and take a run around to Chanonry Point to spend some time (I could set aside half day) trying my hand at photographing the Dolphins.

Anyway - I can no doubt find some information online but thought I'd ask on here if anybody had been, how they got on, what to expect or any other handy info.

Thanks

Phil

I've been to Chanonry Point three times to look for Dolphins and had great views every time.

The website http://www.stylendesign.co.uk/dolphin/viewing.html suggests the likely times.

I've used a couple of places to park. You can park at Rosemarkie and walk out to the point. A short pleasant walk if the weather is decent and you have the time, or drive down along the road that goes from Fortrose (through the middle of the golf course!) to the point. There is car park at the end, but it is not huge.

On my limited experience you are likely to be accompanied by lots of people

How close the dolphins come to the shore varies a lot, sometimes about 15-20 feet.

Dave

Have to mention I know someone who has been the Chanonry Point twice and seen no dolphins.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply Dave - much appreciated.

I found that website last night after posting on here. Handy to have the tide information.

Thanks for the info on parking too.

Not sure yet when I'm going to pop along but I'll let you know how I get on.

Hope you have a good time Phil and I'll look forward to the photos.

I know you were after dolphins but if the tide isn't right when you are in Inverness an alternative wildlife site is -

http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/t/tollieredkites/about.aspx

It is off the A835 between Conon Bridge and Contin and can't be more than 20 miles from Inverness.

I have not been there myself but from what I read, feeding stations for kites are well used by the birds.

Agree with all of the above, its a great spot, Always driven to the carpark at the lighthouse and got parked no problem.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it

Just a coincidence but I've just watched a programme about Dolphins at Chanonry Point

If anybody is interested it's 'episode 7' of 'Natures top 40' available on BBC iplayer.

If your ever in Aberdeen try Greyhope Bay. My Farther in Law took me for a hour or so and we had good views of dolphins and pilot whales

Also as the large ships leave if you head to the light house they ride the waves at the front of the ship.

Pitty we went with no camera as the ladies were shopping.

On our next visit will go and try again.

Thanks Martin

I also work in Aberdeen some days so that's another place to add to the list.
