I have been asked to photograph a band by a friend and some of it will be in a studio. Can anyone help on how to set this up. I am a very mature student. I am sure I have put this request in before but cant find it:bonk:

Hey Susan

Only done a few band shoots myself, what sort of shots are they looking for and for what use, also what style of music.

If in a studio.......how big/small? Any natural light or all artificial?
If at gigs..........Togs pit or just part of the crowd? Any clues as to lighting (can you go to a gig at the same location and check it out?)

Whichever option............
1. Ear defenders are an absolute must......then you can lean on speakers for stability, without permanently damaging your ears.
2. Wide angles and fast lenses (ideally primes) for the times when you can be close.
3. Longer, but still fast zoom lens, for if you can't get close.

A Nifty Fifty (50mm f1.8) is excellent for this kind of thing, as is a 70-200mm f2.8.

Have fun!!

for doing promo shoots for them, try to get them to get creative - there's infinite + 1 shots of bands looking 'moody' in front of a brick wall, or a brick wall with graffiti on, or a a garage door...

for gigs, ear defenders are a pain, if you're going to be doing it regularly, splash out on a pair of surefire EP3 ear plugs, damn good protection. If it matters to you, they can also be used with an acoustic tube radio earpiece for comms. Use as fast glass as you've got, don't be too afraid to bump the iso - grainy pics can be b+w and 'edgy' and grainy if the lighting in the venue is really that bad :P
