Photographers you take inspiration from?

I've a few that inspire me that's is
Jason Lanier, Brett harkness, Damian lovegrove, David ziser and TP's very own Ryan Jarvis

Cobra :D

Mainly dead ones....

Avedon, Newton, Ritts, Carlos Clarke, Donovan, Duffy......Bailey's still alive ;)

It may sound weird but I don't really get inspired by any of the "famous photographers" per say! The only person that may be the exception to that statement is probably Sally mann. I saw a photo of her's in a mag a couple of years ago and like almost all of her work, maybe because her style is very much like mine? I take most of my inspiration from other Flikr users, my Favorites gallery is my go to inspiration. Here if anyone's interested?? My Fav's

Edit: Ignore the ones of me surfing Ice-burgs in Iceland!! lol

I have a huge array of likes and it's always about cultural meaning rather than technical prowess, and I wouldn't model myself on any of them - you have to pursue your own direction, however futile it might be.

None!

You can be inspired/influenced by a photographer's attitude or approach rather than their pictures.

For me that would be Keith Arnatt and Tom Wood.

I met Tom Wood recently when he gave an hour's talk about his work - the event was free and there was probably less than a couple of dozen of us there.
I missed him by minutes when I went to see his landscapes at Llanduddno. I'd driven past him as he left the gallery with a bunch of students. Typical of my luck!

When I was shooting digital I didn't really have any specific people that I really looked up to, as there were so many great landscape photographers out there. Now that I have started shooting film I've found that there are a few that are really great and I like to keep track of their work and blogs etc.

My current favourites are Ben Horne and Nick Carver. It's probably because they're both not a lot older than me and I really like their approach to landscape photography; they go out on trips with large format field cameras and take only a small handful of really great photos for an entire week long trip. It's not so much their photos that I like (although they are amazing), but more their methods and attitudes that inspire me.

This is what recently changed my way of thinking. And photographers I like? Chris Friel is among the ones whose pictures inspire me.

I read this a couple of years ago. Thought it was a brilliant piece. Thanks for the re-heads up!

Formal Photography (indeed any art based subject) education rates other artist inspiration and study very highly. I didn't get it to begin with but I did in the end. A lot of that is to do with the article above.

In answer to the OP, I am inspired by lots of photographers! I think Andy Gotts is a superb portrait photographer and he inspires me to try and draw the character out of my photographic (human) subjects. I like the work of Gregory Crewdson and Joshua Hoffine for their theatrics. I love Fay Godwin's British landscapes and Ansel Adams is always worth a look (although I think it's easier to do "something" with the Grand Canyon/Yosemite than with Heptonstall if you know what I mean!). I love good street photographers and Elliot Erwitt is probably my overall favourite photographer of all time. He's just a genius (and getting an outstanding contribution award from Sony this year too!) Many of the photographers in Street Photography Now are extremely good.

I've also changed my opinion on people too - mainly due to (educational) study. I used to think Martin Parr was a bit of a .... but I have since developed a sense of humour and do appreciate his work now.
