Has any one done an online course in photography? If so what what is it like and what qualification did you get from it? Just looking to do an online one as it will be easier for me as i work odd hours. Just thought it might help improve my knowledge and give me something at the end of it to proove im worthy lol. Seen one place online that sound okey to me, http://www.dmcphotographycollege.com/

Its £199 for each online course and there is like 6sub courses and you get a diploma at the end of it. You email all your work to one of the tutors and they reply with feedback etc.

New York Institute have been around for a very long time, A friend did one of their courses nearly twenty years ago.

If you do decide to do a course, my advice is only to be concerned about what you will learn from it - don't attach any importance to qualifications and don't place any value on a diploma, which is often just a piece of paper issued by someone who is no more recognised as a qualifying body than you are...

And the next thing to think about is the quality of the individuals who assess your work and advise you. If you've never heard of them then they may not be the right people.

And then you have to consider how up to date the course is - a lot of the long-established firms don't seem to update their material very often.

Cheers Gary much appreciated. Not sure what to do know. I don't really know of many if any proffesional photographers.
the two guys who run the courses I suggested earlier seem okey but I don't really know that much.
Is there any online courses which you can recommend. I'm not too fussed about the diploma just want to further my knowledge and improve my camera skills etc.
want to learn better compositions , how to make the best out of the flash, use studio lighting, macro shots, portraits and landscapes just want a better understanding of it all so I can then choose which I prefer.
Cheers for the replies guys much appreciated.

Although people probably disagree, i cannot really see the point in an internet course.

The best thing o do is save themoney andtime spent on it get a couple of good books and go shoot everything.

I have had no courses just read a few magazines and learnt alot that way. I am also very happy with the photographs i am producing.

Just an idea,

Mark

I am going to buy understanding exposures by Bryan Peterson. Just thought a course may be better than a book as a 'pro' is meant to asses your work and point out bad points and help you understand how to improve the shot.

ps, I did the ou course, well recommended for a basic course

I have also done the T189 course from the OU. It lasts 3 months costs about £165 and will teach you all the basics of photography and essential photoshop skills. Tutorials are well structured and the support from tutors and fellow students is exceptional. Unfortunately there is no qualification and no follow on courses but I can still highly recommended it if you are new to digital photography and Photoshop. Oh yes and the price includes a full copy of the latest edition of Photo Shop Elements too!:thumbs::thumbs:

There aren't any that I can recommend - this doesn't mean that there aren't any worth your time and money, just that I don't know of any personally.

There are plenty of books on composition, which is basically just a set of guidelines.

Macro skills can be learned just by doing them, there are some excellent practical courses, run by experts, on landscape photography. I and others run courses on studio photography and there are excellent books, for example 'Light, Science and Magic' on lighting. 'Understanding exposure' by Bryan Peterson is an excellent introduction too.

Was going to do the T189, but after reading a few comments off here, I'm not sure I want to now.

If the OU T189 course teaches you basic photography and basic photoshop skills, I don't think it's the right course for me. I'd say, only my own opinion of course, that i'm a little more advanced than basic in terms of photography. And as for photoshop, i've been using photoshop since i was about 15 years old, so i've got some half decent skills in that area.

I think I might possibly take VTW's advice and just buy some good books, and then shoot as much as i can.

cheers Garry, I'll see if I can find those books you have suggested. What sort of course do you run for studio lighting etc. What do you teach? Is there any books that you can recommend or that you have learnt from doing studio shoots.

Wouldn't mind learning a big more on how to improve pics using photoshop properly by adjusting the hue etc etc.

I don't think that the forum rules allow me to give details of my courses, but you could look at my website.

Photoshop skills are important in photography but computers should only be used to improve good photos, not to rescue bad ones - so you should concentrate your efforts into getting the shot right in camera

link to website? Cheers garry were are you based?
Agreed need to take good pictures on the camera, just would like to know how to improve good ones.

Any good books on photoshop on how to improve already good shots? I have a ps book now but it mainly talks about major editing and what all the tools are used for.

Bradford, W. Yorks.

Link is in my first reply, I think it would be spamming to include it again.
