I hosted some pics on photobucket on another site, and one of the people who'd had a look sent me this email :

Hi Rik, my anti-spyware software found some malware in the banners of the site where your pics are posted. Basically its a malware virus called 'PC Antispyware 2010', which is a rather nasty spyware which opens up your PC and sends your information to Eastern European gangsters. I think it's in the banner at the top. It also disables most common virus protection software, but makes it appear to be active! Nice...

Just beware of that site.

Bob (IT person)

Is this something that we should be concerned about. I know very little about this sort of stuff..

BB.

PC Antispyware 2010 is indeed a nasty piece of software that you do not want to install on your machine.

If you don't believe me, just ask Google...

It sounds like the hosting site you are using is displaying adverts for this malware. People will probably not "catch" anything from just viewing the photos, but may be tempted to download the malware which pretends to be a beneficial program.

id be extremely surprised if photobucket was displaying adverts for malware. its more likely that the person that emailed you:

1) in fact knows little about this and is sticking his oar in slightly
2) has the antispyware malware on his machine

I agree, very unlikely indeed that Photobucket is offering malware banners.

However, the OP said "I hosted some pics on photobucket on another site", which I took to mean that the malware banner was on another site, not Photobucket.

Perhaps the OP could clarify?

I use another forum, and posted a few pics, but linked to a photobucket album aswell.

The guy (Bob) claimed his virus detector had picked up on this malware thing from a banner on photobucket.

id ignore him, like i say id be extremely surprised if it was photobucket that was presenting the threat. even if they were there isnt anything you can do about it, photobucket would of noticed by now and taken action.

its more likely that his machine has the malware installed on his machine and its popping up coincidentally at the same time as he views photobucket.
