Would like to have some architectural pics of recent trip to Istanbul printed in photobook form and have never used a photobook printer before. My monitor is not calibrated, so is there any way of getting an accurate idea of how the pics will print out without calibrating the monitor?

Also any recommendations for quality photobook printers?

Thanks.

some book stores do colour correction fo a fee. you will need to check ones in your price band and see if they do so.

loads of the consumer based big boys run all the files they received through an automatic file correcting software system - photobox, cewe (who do jessops, tescto, asda, aldi etc photobooks)

33L / snappingsam,

Thanks for the feedback. I've decided to upgrade my monitor and get some calibration software before taking the plunge. Don't want to waste money on a disappointing result.

Strange that there don't seem to be be any independent reviews of the different suppliers. I've googled the subject but can't find anything up to date.

Who do you use / would you recommend using?

Cheers.

Depending on where you are purchasing your book from, you might be able to get a single A4 (or similar) print done of one image in similar paper just to double-check the darkness etc. prior to doing the bfull book order.
If I am doing a large print at home (a3+), I will often do a small test print to check that the darkness of the image is correct, even though the printer and monitor are calibrated together. Helps to ensure that one ink hasn't gone off, or a setting hasn't changed on the monitor by its own (I wonder who could have aided in that?)

I read a review somewhere a couple of years ago, I have a feeling it was Amateur Photographer, they compaired different companies and I know
http://www.myphotobook.co.uk/ did fairly well in the ratings, I did download the software but haven't got round to ordering yet.

many of the places you send a photobook to get printed end up at CEWE - they do Jessops, Aldi, Tesco, Asda etc - so little to choose....

There are a number of traditional litho printers who have put in Xerox and Indago printers who are getting into this market - but many don't know about colour correcting
