Are you doing the themed 52 or subjects of your own choice Tina?
I've just completed the themed 52 for 2010, some weeks were straightforward with ideas coming straight away, others took a wee bit more thinking. whichever one you choose, I am sure you will enjoy it. Good luck  Iain

Good luck! I'm sure you can complete it

Nothing terribly imaginative but I have struggled to photograph this for some time and still not happy with it.

I look forward to some c&C that will illuminate my blind spot

Nice what is it?
For me I think it needs to be at a lower angle maybe

Looks like a hideout for an archer/gunman maybe?

World war II pill box

Apparently the Germans were expected to land in Parkgate and come up Station Road to Neston...

I did look at a lower angle, mayb try harder with that, I think I might need supplementary lighting.

Interesting. Never come across one before. Thanks

Looks like you had bright harsh light. Maybe a B&W conversion would enhance the photo??

they are difficult subjects , I tried one near me from various angles and times of day etc but never managed anything that I was happy with . I agree a b&w conversion might help ,

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'm not a b&w fan so have no experience in the field...but Elements has a button ;) This is what happenend....

Not sure I'm any happier...

Seeing this makes me feel bad at my poor attempt and now I am thinking about going to photograph the old cold war nuclear observation bunker near my house.

Agree could do with a lover angle.

Hi Tina, not keen on the B+W conversion, but the original colour pic has a lot going for it.
You've caught a great sky there with a natural strong blue and fluffy white clouds.

I think part of what is making things difficult is that there is too much confusing trees/bushes which makes it hard to get a strong simple image. I wonder if getting in lower and closer would work better.

Tina,

i have to agree with Patrick about the trees.. most pill box shots i've seen are from low angles and with open backgrounds, so they are decluttered and the pill box stands out..

the B&W did nothing really except make a silly face of the box.

we have loads round here in the fens and i've been meaning to get out there and find a decent one..

Hi Tina, prefer the colour shot , although I would agree that the pil box does get a little lost amongst the trees, being of a similar tone. Lovely blue sky though

Hi Tina

Pill boxes are such an abstract shape that I think they necessitate an abstract treatment and the trees get in the way of that. Fret not, week 2 is just around the corner! I struggled this week too, but I've shot and I'm going to move on :bonk:

Hiya Tina

First of all thanks for joining this 52, mainly because I have found your image to be the most challenging out of all of them (I don't mean that in a bad way, more in the sense of streching ones creative imagination .... it is a perfect example and I thank you for that).

I empathise with you, and understand your frustration of the image to want to turn it into something facinating, afterall it is a good subject and there are some very useful pieces to the puzzle here.

You may have noticed that there is a high view count on this image/post, probably due to me flitting back and forth to it

Eventually, and I hope you don't mind, plus I will delete after, but I have copied this one to my desktop to have a play. I have only done this with a few select posts from the 52. I just felt the need to take the image and learn from it and see what I could do.

I have come up with some results, which I think are quite good, although I am still in turmoil about the actual building itself re contrast and getting the sky right. Want to get the balance right to give it the authentic WW11 look.

You may be asking yourslef now, 'why would someone go to this exteme'?, well the answer is I finished this project early and needed to find something along the same lines to tax my mind, and your pic was it.

I don't want to hi-jack (hate that word) your thread, but I would be keen to hear what you think of my interpretation of your subject if you are interested.

Overall though, from a crit point I think a lower angle, a bit to the left and a bit further back would have benefited the composition.

As for the lighting, I think that whatever time of day you shot/or shoot this pic you will still have a lot to contend with, i.e., shadows from the trees and the whole business of the scene and getting the complimentary weather conditions.

Like I said, if you are interested to see what I have come up with, let me know via PM and I will post same to you via email. I can't do it here through TP as that would mean I have to upload to flickr, and after all it is your image and you have the rights to such.

I think you are sitting on a litte goldmine there, and there is so much potential.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I look at this regularly and keep coming back to this side, largely from the light availability and physical location. I want to stand where there is no place!

Glad it wasn't just me, I didn't think b&w helped the shot.

Dawn - pm next stop!

Hiya Tina,

Very nice indeed, I think you are going to put that to good use during this 52 project :)

Cheers

Dawn :)

Oooh I am so jealous - awesome lens :) congratulations.

As far as the shot is concerned I feel it may have been a little better with a smaller aperture you get some of the ones in focus too. What do you think?

Hi Tina,

I'm a bit green with envy as well - I'd love the fedex man to deliver a 70-200 2.8 to me (or DHL, or Citylink, or Royal Mail - I'm not fussy!)

Shot looks good, but I think it needs a smidge of noise reduction - its a bit evident especially in the hood. I like it though, nice idea. :)

Noise, yes, I understand the concept but I really don't know how to 'do' noise reduction. Will investigate...

Hi Tina,

Am I the only one who sees a face in that pillbox?
Definitely prefer the colour to the B&W. It's a fascinating subject and I feel your frustration at trying to get the shot you want of it.
What you have works well though. Perhaps a little tight at the bottom, but overall a nice composition and it's really well exposed for both foreground and sky. I think what's not quite working is that the pill box is so similar in tone to the trees behind it that it's not standing out as a strong enough focal point.

A lot of people have suggested a lower angle for this, but I think I'd go a step further. Personally I'd have a go at lying on my back and shooting looking up at the pillbox to get a sense of size & scale and outline it against the sky.

And week 2 is starting to depress me now. So far I've seen a new pair of shoes and a shiny new lens . . . not that I'm jealous or anything, but those are two of my favourite things
