Hello all,

First of all, hello, I am new to Talk Photography. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to tell me what size photo would fit an A4 photo frame? When I say size, I mean either 10x8, 12x8, 5x7, 6x4 or 8x6, as these are the dimensions that are available from the photo printing company. It is my best friend's 17th birthday in June and I am wanting to surprise her with a framed photo of her and her horse cross country. She has been through a lot - her previous horse died suddenly last August after getting colic, and her other horse has recently been diagnosed with the equine form of diabetes, I think it is, so I really want to make this birthday special for her.

I hop everyone is keeping well and are not suffering too much due to this isolation business!

Thank you in advance,
Catherine

Welcome to TP!
Unfortunately A4 is just under 12 inches by just over 8 inches so a 12x8 is too long on the 8 inch side. Most A4 frames come with a mount though, this sits on top of the photo and its opening is less than A4. If you measure the mount opening then that will give you an idea of what size print would fit best.
A4 is 29.7 x 21 cm or 11.68 x 8.27 inches.
Hope that helps but if not, ask again.

Hi and welcome to TP

I echo what @Suvv says but would also offer this added consideration:-
If you have taken the picture(s) on your Nikon D7100 that has a 3:2 ratio sensor and on the surmise that you are going to print the picture uncropped or if cropped you are keeping the 1.5:1 ratio then the only print sizes you mention that fit that ratio are the 12x8 and the 6x4

Obviously it depends how much you wish to spend on the photo and its framing but just maybe if you can justify/afford it is to get it printed 12x8 and take it into a local framing company who will mount it and bespoke frame it for you?

Having said that ~ Ikea do a 30ccm x 40cm frame and though I have never used the included mount it does come with one....I have in the past gotten bespoke mounts made with the aperture sized to take a 12x8 inch print and the 'balance' of that place in the 30x40cm frame looks good.

Any questions just ask as needed?

PS for mounting a print you need to get it printed with a border......................I have been using https://www.tradecanvasprint.co.uk for my prints and they provide and excellent value service and product. @Tradecanvasprint is a TP member, in the online order process you you can 'tick' for a 13mm border on the print. NB the printed area is exactly 12x8inches :)

You should have the photo printed first, then buy a correct frame size to fit the photo. For example, if the photo is printed on a 10x8 paper, then buy a 10x8 frame, if the photo is printed on an A4 paper, then buy an A4 frame.

That would be a lot easier than buying the frame first, then struggle with trying to get the photo to the correct size to fit into the frame. Unless you already have the A4 frame available? (Reusing an old frame instead of buying a new one?) In that case, ask the photo printing company if they can print the photo in A4.

But be advised that a photo from the camera does not always fit an A4 size. In order to fill a photo size into an A4 size, some parts of the photo will be outside of the A4 print area, making them look like they've been cropped off. Or that if one length of the photo fits one length of the paper, then there would be gaps at the other sides. (For example: If height of photo fits height of paper, then width of photo is shorter than width of paper, leaving gaps on the left and right sides of photo.)

If printing a photo on a different ratio (for example printing a photo no A4 instead of a 10x8 photo paper), it is better to use an application software (i.e.: Photoshop), import the photo, resize and reposition the photo on the paper to suit your prefer view, then print it yourself, because you chose which parts of the photo you want to be cropped off.

Just pick a common/regular size & you can't go far wrong - ideally this is based on the ratio of the original image (unless it can be cropped?)

It's much cheaper to buy a frame than it is to have one specially made.

I agree with @Major Eazy about getting the photo printed first at a size you are happy with and then get a frame and mount to fit (*bay/Am*zon). Photographs always look better in a frame if they are mounted Typically an 8x10 photo would be fitted with mount into a 10x12 frame. You will need to get the photo printed with a small border if possible.

2 simple options
Find a photo sized frame (a4 isn’t one)
Find a photo printer that lists an A4 crop
