When not running myself and if I have the time, I occasionally go along to races (cross country etc) and take photos. I then upload to flickr and send a link via facebook to the relevant running clubs for people to view/ download if they wish. I have seen other people upload the photos to their facebook account directly. I see the advantage of this as people can tag each other in one or more image. I had the flickr account long before I joined facebook, so never thought of presenting the photos any other way.

What are the advantages/ disadvantages of these two methods?

Pros for FB:
1. some people love FB and seem to live their lives on it. If that's the crowd you want to reach, FB is a good tool to do so.
2. tagging and things is pretty easy

Cons for FB:
1. some people hate FB and if a photo is on there and they're not "on" they probably won't be able to (or perhaps won't want to) see the pictures
2. not sure of the quality of FB and how it degrades pictures... could be important to you?

Ultimately, if you use a third party site to upload pictures to, you're dependent upon their storage and access limitations. Obviously if Flickr closed tomorrow there would be quite a lot of dead links around... If you want ultimate control, you may be better off getting your own space. I don't bother (I use Flickr) but I also share occasional snaps on FB for friends/family. It's horses for courses for me. I certainly wouldn't see FB as a photo repository for what I want, though...

I was thinking of using Flikr as a back up solution, however I was thinking of Facebook for the same thing (marking both sets of albums as private) does any one know if Flikr downgrades the quality of the photo?

Thanks

One thing that should be noted is that if you set up a page for your Photography, each post will only go out to a fraction of all the people who 'Like' your page, unless you give Facebook cash.

So, for example, you could have 100 likes, upload an image and only 20 people will see it. Pay money and more people will see it. Pay even more money and even more people will see it.

Similar algorithms are at work on your personal feed, so people who don't interact with you much are less likely to see it. I don't think it's as severe as pages though, although it's much more unquantifiable than page views (as Facebook tells you the number of people who have seen a post if you're the page admin).
